Buccaneers Elevate Offensive Lineman Named Michael Jordan Ahead of Monday Night Game

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers promoted offensive lineman Michael Jordan from their practice squad to the active roster for Monday Night Football against the Houston Texans, the team announced Monday, a move driven by injuries along the offensive line.

According to reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the 27-year-old Jordan — not the basketball Hall of Famer — was signed to the Buccaneers in the offseason, was among the final cuts in late August and has remained with the team on the practice squad. He was elevated after starter Tristan Wirfs was ruled out and Luke Goedeke was listed as questionable for the matchup that kicks off at 8 p.m. ET.

Jordan played three seasons at Ohio State and was a fourth-round NFL Draft pick. His professional résumé includes stints with the Cincinnati Bengals, Green Bay Packers, Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots, among other teams. The Buccaneers initially added him in the offseason before cutting him in the final roster moves and re-signing him to the practice squad.

The decision to elevate Jordan came as Tampa Bay copes with multiple injuries along its offensive front. Wirfs, the team’s regular right tackle, is out for the game, and Goedeke’s questionable designation prompted the promotion to ensure depth for Monday’s lineup.

News of the move prompted a wave of social-media reaction due to Jordan’s name, with many fans posting memes and jokes that referenced Michael Jordan, the basketball star. Social-media posts ranged from humorous takes on the name coincidence to larger cultural references about athletes crossing sports. "Bro how many side quests is he going to do?" one fan wrote. Another posted, "Doing everything he can to try and pass LeBron."

Tampa Bay’s midweek roster adjustments follow a pattern seen around the league when injuries force teams to tap practice-squad players for short-term elevations. NFL rules allow teams to promote practice-squad players to the active roster for game day under specific conditions, a mechanism clubs frequently use to address late injuries.

The Buccaneers and Texans meet in Monday Night Football with Tampa Bay aiming to maintain protection for its quarterbacks amid the depleted line. The team’s official game-day active roster will determine whether Jordan starts, provides depth on the bench, or serves in a rotational role during the contest.

The club has not released a full depth chart for the game beyond the injury designations. Coaches and officials typically provide final game-status updates as kickoff approaches.

Fans can follow the matchup on national television at 8 p.m. ET, where the elevated roster and any in-game lineup changes will be on display.
