Butler presses Warriors for clarity as Kuminga contract stalemate nears camp
With training camp less than two weeks away, Butler seeks a firm plan on Kuminga’s restricted free-agent status and the Warriors’ next move

Jimmy Butler has pressed Golden State Warriors management for clarity on Jonathan Kuminga’s contract, a stalemate that has slowed the team’s offseason moves with training camp less than two weeks away.
NBC Sports Bay Area’s Dalton Johnson reported that Butler reached out to the organization to ask for a plan, and that Stephen Curry and Draymond Green are in the loop. ESPN later reported that the core issue centers on Kuminga’s request for a third year with a player option, while Golden State has offered roughly $75 million over three years with a team option or $54 million with no option. Kuminga, 22, averaged 15.3 points and 4.6 rebounds across 47 games (10 starts) last season.
If the parties are unable to reach an agreement by Oct. 1, Kuminga would accept the $7.9 million qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
Golden State acquired Butler from the Heat in February, ending a fraught stretch in Miami that included a public contract dispute; the Warriors quickly extended a two-year deal to keep Butler. The Kuminga situation is part of a broader balancing act for the franchise as it tries to mix veteran winners with a young core, and the uncertainty surrounding Kuminga’s move could shape the team’s offseason timeline and cap planning.
As training camp approaches, Golden State faces a decision: commit to Kuminga with a long-term plan or explore alternatives if a deal cannot be reached. The next two weeks will determine whether Kuminga remains in the Warriors’ future options or explores unrestricted free agency after one season under a qualifying offer.
