Caitlin Clark mocks $200 fine over social posts targeting referees after Fever playoff win
The 23-year-old guard joked about the WNBA penalty following Indiana's Game 2 victory; she remains sidelined by a groin injury as the Fever move through the postseason.

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark was fined $200 by the WNBA after a social media post that appeared aimed at referees following Indiana's 77-60 victory over the Atlanta Dream in Game 2 of the first-round playoff series. The league confirmed the penalty, tied to comments posted on Instagram in the hours after the game.
Clark, 23, a two-time All-Star and the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year, posted replies under photos from the Fever bench that referenced the officials and the bench mob. The Fever's official account posted photos of the bench celebrating, and Clark's responses suggested the energy would carry into the next game.
Fever teammate Sophie Cunningham joined in, joking that the cost of the penalty would be manageable and that a GoFundMe might be in order. The online banter highlighted the lighthearted tone among players about the league fine while staying focused on the postseason.

Clark and Cunningham have since been ruled out for the season. Clark has been sidelined with a groin injury since July, and after attempting a comeback through August, she was ruled out for the year on Sept. 4. In a post on X after the news, Clark said she had given her best effort to return and thanked fans for their support through the long process.
The Fever carried on in the postseason without Clark, relying on depth as it pushed through the first round. Indiana clinched the series with an 87-85 road win in Game 3 on Sept. 18, 2025, at Gateway Center Arena in College Park, Georgia. The victory capped a series in which Indiana managed the absence of its top scorer while continuing to feed its young core.

Clark, the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year, had been a central figure entering the playoffs, and her absence shaped the Fever's approach to each game. The team leaned on veterans and role players as it moved deeper into the postseason, balancing the push for a deep run with the realities of managing injuries to one of the league's brightest young talents. The incident surrounding the fine and the ongoing injury issues added depth to the season's narrative as Indiana looked to extend its postseason run.
