Cameron Young powers U.S. Ryder Cup debut at Bethpage Black

Cameron Young, a Ryder Cup rookie from Scarborough, New York, gave Team USA early momentum at Bethpage Black. He earned a point in Friday's four-ball and then teamed with Bryson DeChambeau for a 4-and-2 victory over Matt Fitzpatrick and Ludvig Åberg in Saturday morning foursomes, the Americans' lone point in that session.

Young became the first Team USA player to win the first two Ryder Cup matches of his career by at least four holes since Patrick Reed in 2014. He could not become the fourth American to win his first three Ryder Cup matches by at least four holes, dropping a 2-down decision to Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry with Justin Thomas.

"This is the kind of stuff you dream of," Young said after the morning session. "And we've performed well over the last couple days, and having gotten a few points on the board is pretty awesome."

DeChambeau lauded Young, saying, "Cam played unbelievable today."

Young's rapid rise comes with strong local ties: He grew up in Scarborough, played at Sleepy Hollow Country Club, and previously held the Bethpage Black course record with a 64 in the 2017 New York State Open before Brooks Koepka shot 63 at the 2019 PGA Championship.

It took until the second session of matches for Young to get his Ryder Cup chance, but once he did, he quickly cemented his role as a key contributor.

His mother Barbara told The Post's Mark Cannizzaro that he was "so ready for this."

As the weekend continues, Team USA aims to build on the early momentum.
