Canada rout Australia 46-5 to set up semi-final with New Zealand
World No. 2 Canada piled on six tries in Bristol to reach the Women's Rugby World Cup last four

Canada demolished Australia 46-5 at Ashton Gate in Bristol on Tuesday to set up a semi-final meeting with holders New Zealand, the latest statement of intent from a side bidding for World Cup glory.
The world number two were irresistible in the first half, crossing five times and taking a 31-5 lead into the break. Canada finished with six tries to Australia's solitary score, produced by Desiree Miller, while Sophie de Goede converted four and Jordyn Tessier added a penalty.
Canada struck inside two minutes when flanker Caroline Crossley broke down the left and wing Asia Hogan-Rochester raced in unopposed. The visitors combined powerful forward carries with rapid backline handling throughout the first half, with de Goede — returning from a serious knee injury earlier this year — instrumental in creating and finishing scoring opportunities.
Alysha Corrigan produced a moment of individual quality when she finished a sweeping move with a one-handed try on 13 minutes and later claimed her second score. Prop McKinley Hunt powered over for what was the fifth Canada try before halftime after a well-worked lineout move gave the pack momentum. Number eight Fabiola Forteza added a sixth try after 49 minutes and flanker Karen Paquin crossed late to extend the cushion.
Australia, coached by former England captain Jo Yapp, struggled to cope with Canada's relentless tempo. The Canadians registered the fastest average ruck speed of any team in the pool stage, a tactic that repeatedly denied the Wallaroos time to set their defence. Australia’s only first-half reward came from an early breakaway try by Miller.
The 16,571 crowd at Ashton Gate cheered loudly throughout the second half, with one of the biggest roars reserved for a cameo on the big screen of Ilona Maher, the US centre and social media figure who spent time with Bristol last season. The victory also took Canada past the winning margin England recorded against Australia in Brighton last weekend.
Canada have reached the Women's Rugby World Cup final once before, losing to England in 2014. With England placed on the opposite side of the draw, the Red Roses can only meet Canada in a potential title match. For now, Canada must depose reigning champions New Zealand in a blockbuster semi-final at Ashton Gate on Friday.
Canada named a starting XV featuring Schell at fullback, Corrigan and Florence Symonds in the midfield and Hogan-Rochester on the wing, with de Goede captaining a pack that included Crossley, Hunt and Forteza. Australia’s starting side included Halse at fullback and Miller among the outside backs, with Lyndsay Palu leading the forwards.
The win underlined Canada's credentials as genuine contenders in the tournament, combining physical forward play, quick ruck speed and slick backline execution to produce a comprehensive victory and set up a high-stakes last-four clash with the defending champions.
