Cardinals' James Conner carted off field with ankle injury against the 49ers
Backup Trey Benson likely to handle early-back duties as Arizona evaluates its running back depth after Conner's third-quarter injury at Levi's Stadium.

James Conner suffered a scary-looking ankle injury during the third quarter of the Arizona Cardinals' game against the San Francisco 49ers at Levi's Stadium on Sept. 21, 2025. He was hit low on a rushing attempt when his ankle became trapped and appeared to bend awkwardly as he was brought down by a 49ers player, prompting immediate concern from teammates and medical staff. After the carting off the field, Arizona ruled Conner out for the remainder of the game.
Conner finished with nine carries for 22 yards and added 15 yards on three receptions. Through two prior games, he had rushed for 73 yards and a touchdown and collected five catches for 23 yards and another TD. The Cardinals now face a thinner backfield behind him with Tre Benson and Emari Demercado next on the depth chart.
Benson is expected to slot into the starting role if the injury sidelines Conner for any stretch. The second-year back produced 69 total yards in Week 1 and 14 in Week 2, providing a bridge for Arizona as it adjusts to the loss. Demercado offers a change-of-pace option in the backfield and on passing downs.
Arizona's offense will rely on other players to step up while Conner is out. The Cardinals will try to remain competitive in the NFC West. Cardinals officials did not provide an update on Conner's status in the moment, but the team is expected to update as more information becomes available.
