Chelsea hit by double injury blow as Liam Delap ruled out and Dario Essugo undergoes surgery

Chelsea have been hit by a double injury setback with striker Liam Delap sidelined for around 10 weeks and summer signing Dario Essugo undergoing surgery on a thigh problem.

Delap, 22, who joined the club from Ipswich Town in June for a reported £30 million, was forced off during the first half of Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Fulham before the international break after pulling up while chasing a through ball. Initial scans suggested a six-to-eight-week absence, but further assessment indicated a worse hamstring injury and a recovery now expected to stretch into November, according to The Athletic. The revised timetable means he is likely to miss at least 12 matches across the Premier League, Champions League and Carabao Cup, including domestic fixtures against Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham and European games with Bayern Munich, Benfica and Ajax. Chelsea have pencilled in a possible return against Wolves on November 8, though a later comeback after the international window has also been flagged as a realistic target.

The injury to Delap has already had immediate consequences for Chelsea’s squad planning. Nicolas Jackson’s proposed loan move to Bayern Munich was briefly halted amid the uncertainty over striker options but was later completed. Chelsea also recalled young forward Marc Guiu from his season-long loan at Sunderland after just a month to bolster attacking depth.

Essugo, 20, who arrived from Sporting Lisbon in the summer for a reported £18.5 million, posted an update from hospital after undergoing an operation on a thigh injury sustained on Portugal Under-21s duty. In a social media message he expressed frustration at the setback but said he believed he would return stronger. The midfielder had been aiming to push for first-team minutes under manager Enzo Maresca early in the season and will now face a further spell on the sidelines as Chelsea’s fixture list intensifies.

Chelsea’s summer recruit Joao Pedro, signed from Brighton for about £60 million, is expected to lead the line in Delap’s absence and has already been used in a deeper role this term. The Blues return to Premier League action this weekend against Brentford as they manage the immediate implications of the twin injuries while preparing for a congested calendar that includes domestic and European commitments.

The setbacks come amid a period of transition for Chelsea under Maresca, who has been integrating several new arrivals into the squad. The club’s injury problems will test the depth of that recruitment and the readiness of younger players returned early from loans. Chelsea medical staff will continue to monitor both players’ rehabilitation programmes and provide updates as recovery plans are refined.

Delap’s absence removes a young option in a frontline that had been evolving following the summer window, while Essugo’s operation curtails midfield competition at a club balancing multiple competitions. The club is expected to issue formal medical updates in the coming days detailing the expected timelines for both players as scans and postoperative assessments progress.
