Chelsea have held talks over a potential move for Ecuadorian centre back Deinner Ordoñez, the 15-year-old defensive prospect who has drawn attention from Liverpool and several clubs in Spain and Germany.

Sources briefed on the discussions said Independiente del Valle, the Ecuadorian club that produced Moisés Caicedo, Kendry Paez and Piero Hincapié, has been willing to open negotiations over a deal similar to previous arrangements for its teenage talents. Independiente are reported to be seeking a package in the region of £14 million including add-ons.

Ordoñez rose into wider view after playing above his age group at this year’s South American Under-20 Championship, where he was the youngest player to appear in more than a decade. Already more than six feet tall, he is right-footed but has been deployed as a left-sided centre back. Scouts say he combines comfortable ball progression and build-from-the-back qualities with aerial ability, though he remains in the process of physical development.

Clubs across Europe have been monitoring Ordoñez for months. Liverpool scouts have been credited with interest, and teams in Spain and Germany are understood to have sent representatives to watch him. Chelsea, who have been active in pursuing young global talents, have held talks to gauge whether to make a formal approach, according to people familiar with the matter.

International rules prevent most transfers of players under 18, and Ordoñez will not turn 18 until October 2027. Independiente del Valle have in the past structured deals that secure the long-term rights to a player while deferring an international transfer until eligibility is met. Kendry Paez, one of the club’s recent high-profile departures, agreed terms as a minor and only moved once regulations allowed.

Any agreement would therefore likely include mechanisms to protect Independiente’s interests while meeting FIFA transfer rules. That can involve staged payments, sell-on clauses and a contract that takes effect when the player reaches the required age for an international move.

Chelsea’s interest forms part of a broader strategy to identify and sign promising teenagers with high ceilings. The club has previously targeted young players earlier in their development to secure long-term assets and fend off rivals from England and continental Europe. Liverpool’s reported interest places Ordoñez among a small group of South American teenagers attracting attention from elite European academies.

Independiente del Valle’s reputation for producing senior-level talent has grown in recent years, with several alumni moving on to prominent roles in Europe. The club’s recruitment and development model has made its academy graduates attractive to top clubs willing to commit financially ahead of a player’s full professional maturity.

It was not clear on Thursday whether Chelsea would submit a formal offer or how quickly negotiations might proceed. Any transfer arrangement would be subject to FIFA eligibility rules for minors, agreement on financial terms and the approval of the player and his representatives. Clubs on both sides of the proposed move declined to comment through intermediaries reached for this report.
