Chelsea striker Liam Delap sidelined until December with hamstring injury
Enzo Maresca says the 22-year-old will be out for 10–12 weeks after being withdrawn 14 minutes into the win over Fulham
Chelsea striker Liam Delap will be sidelined until December after suffering a hamstring injury in the club's 2-0 win over Fulham, manager Enzo Maresca confirmed.
Delap, 22, was withdrawn 14 minutes into the match before the international break. Maresca said the forward will be unavailable for 10 to 12 weeks, effectively ruling him out for the next two months of the season. The player joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town in June for a reported fee of £30 million and had featured in all three of the club's opening fixtures this term.
Chelsea moved quickly to bolster their striking options after the injury. The club recalled young forward Marc Guiu from a loan spell at Sunderland the day after Delap's injury to provide cover up front. The recall came amid uncertainty over Nicolas Jackson, who completed a transfer to Bayern Munich for a reported £70.5 million the following day.
Joao Pedro, who arrived from Brighton earlier in the summer, is available to lead the line and is expected to be a key option during Delap's absence. Maresca said the squad is working to adapt to the setback. "For us, the only number nine is [Marc] Guiu and Joao [Pedro] can play there, and against Fulham we used Ty [George]," he said.
Delap's injury represents a significant early-season blow for the west London club, which is integrating several new attacking signings. The 22-year-old had been seen as part of Chelsea's planned forward options following his off-season move from Ipswich.
Marc Guiu's return from Sunderland provides immediate internal reinforcement; the 18-year-old had been gaining first-team experience on loan. Chelsea's summer activity in the transfer market, including the departures and arrivals up front, has left the club relying on a mix of youth prospects and established recruits while assessing Delap's recovery timetable.
Medical staff will monitor Delap's rehabilitation in the coming weeks, and the club is expected to provide updates as his treatment progresses. Chelsea's fixture list over the next two months will test the squad's depth as it copes with the absence of a player who had featured in the opening matches of the campaign.
