Chiefs' Chris Jones added to injury report ahead of Ravens showdown

Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Chris Jones was added to the team's injury report Saturday under the 'non-injury related - personal' designation, the club announced. The move raised questions about his availability for Sunday's pivotal showdown with the Baltimore Ravens. Later Saturday, CBS Sports' Tracy Wolfson reported Jones would attend a family funeral, and Chiefs officials said they expect him to be ready for the 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff.

Jones, 31, is in his tenth NFL season. Through three games this season, he has one sack and three tackles for loss, along with five total tackles. The Chiefs' star defensive end is on pace for the fewest total tackles in a season since 2016 and roughly the same number of sacks as last year, when he totaled five.

KC opened the campaign with losses to the Chargers in Brazil and the Philadelphia Eagles at home before earning a 22-9 win over the New York Giants in the Meadowlands.

Baltimore's start has included a 41-40 loss to the Bills, a win over the Browns, and a 34-18 defeat at home to the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football. The Ravens, like the Chiefs, have faced questions about consistency and health early in the season, and Sunday’s game will serve as a litmus test for two of the AFC’s perceived contenders.

With both teams among the early favorites to win the Super Bowl this season (Ravens +550, Chiefs 13-1), the matchup could help establish early momentum in the conference. A loss would leave one club at 1-3, a disappointing start given the expectations surrounding both franchises. The game also features a marquee quarterback matchup, with Patrick Mahomes leading Kansas City and Lamar Jackson guiding Baltimore, two players whose teams rely on explosive plays and situational execution.

Jones's status adds another layer of intrigue for a Chiefs defense that has drawn scrutiny through the first quarter of the season. If he plays, his presence could help Kansas City pressure Jackson and disrupt Baltimore's run-pass balance. If he sits, the Chiefs would likely lean on rotational depth and scheme adjustments to contend with a Ravens offense known for both improvisational runs and timely throws downfield. The outcome could influence how both teams approach the rest of their schedules as they navigate a compressed early-season slate.
