Christopher Bell dedicates Bristol victory to Charlie Kirk
NASCAR winner honors conservative activist slain at Utah Valley University as sports world offers tributes

Christopher Bell dedicated his NASCAR Cup Series victory at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday to Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist who was shot and killed on a Utah campus earlier in the week.
Bell, driver of the No. 20 DEWALT Toyota, climbed from his car moments after the Bass Pro Shops Night Race and said the win was for Kirk. "It wasn’t pretty there at the end, but we got her done," Bell said. "Most importantly, this week’s obviously been a very tough week. You know, there’s a lot on our minds. This one's for Charlie."
Kirk, 31, co‑founder of Turning Point USA, was shot on the campus of Utah Valley University on Wednesday afternoon. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead, authorities said. The alleged gunman, identified by police as 22‑year‑old Tyler Robinson, surrendered after a two‑day manhunt when family members persuaded him to turn himself in, according to law enforcement statements.
Bell’s dedication came amid a wave of tributes across professional and college sports. The New York Yankees held a moment of silence before their game Wednesday, the Chicago Cubs staged a "moment of reflection" before Friday’s game and called for an end to political violence, and Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Blake Treinen wore a hat on the mound featuring Kirk’s name and a cross during a game Friday. Thursday night’s NFL game between the Green Bay Packers and Washington Commanders included a league‑decided moment of silence before kickoff.
The NFL later issued a statement saying the moment Thursday had been the league’s decision and that clubs would be left to decide whether to hold tributes before upcoming games. Several teams and college programs have offered public statements or on‑field acknowledgments since the shooting, and Oregon’s coach delivered a message calling for unity following the killing of a Ducks fan identified as Kirk.
Bell’s victory at the half‑mile Bristol short track marked a prominent public acknowledgment from a driver in the NASCAR circuit during a weekend of sporting tributes. The race win proved a focal point for his brief comments on the in‑race radio and postrace interview as teams and leagues continued to gauge responses to the fatal shooting and to the nationwide reactions it prompted.
Investigations into the shooting and the circumstances leading up to it remain ongoing, and authorities have released limited details pending further inquiry. Sports organizations said they would continue to weigh how best to honor victims and address concerns about violence as more information becomes available.
