Christopher Bell Dedicates Bristol Victory to Charlie Kirk After Utah Killing

Christopher Bell dedicated his NASCAR victory Saturday in Bristol, Tennessee, to conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed earlier this week in Utah.

Bell raced from fourth to first on the final restart, led the last four laps and narrowly beat Brad Keselowski by 0.343 seconds to claim his fourth win of the season and end a 24-race winless stretch. In postrace remarks that were broadcast around the circuit, Bell said, "It wasn't pretty there at the end, but we got her done. This week has obviously been a very tough week and there's a lot on our mind. This one's for Charlie." The comments drew large cheers from fans in the stands as Bell clenched his fist and pumped it toward the crowd.

Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA and a prominent conservative commentator, was shot Wednesday at Utah Valley University and died of his injuries. Authorities arrested 22-year-old Tyler James Robinson of Washington, Utah, on suspicion of aggravated murder and other felony offenses. Prosecutors were drawing up formal charges that could be filed early next week, when Robinson is expected to make his first court appearance.

Investigators have interviewed Robinson's relatives and executed a search warrant at his family's home in Washington, about 240 miles southwest of the university. Utah Governor Spencer Cox said family members told authorities Robinson "had become more political in recent years" and that conversations at the family dinner table had touched on Kirk's scheduled campus appearance and whether the activist was "spreading hate."

Officials said ammunition found with the weapon used in the shooting carried engraved messages with taunting, anti-fascist and meme-oriented text; one bullet casing reportedly bore the phrase "Hey, fascist! Catch!" The New York Times reported that messages and screenshots obtained from acquaintances showed Robinson mocked the manhunt and taunted the FBI while joking about reward money before surrendering to police. In one chat quoted by the Times, a user wrote, "Tyler killed Charlie!!!!" and Robinson replied, "My doppelganger's trying to get me in trouble."

Kirk's family and associates are planning a memorial for Sept. 21 at State Farm Stadium in Arizona. His casket arrived Thursday in his home state aboard Air Force Two, accompanied by Vice President J.D. Vance. In a livestreamed video, Kirk's widow, Erika Kirk, said she would continue his campus tour and his radio and podcast programs, telling supporters, "To everyone listening tonight across America, the movement my husband built will not die. It won´t. I refuse to let that happen."

Bell's tribute at Bristol marked one of the more visible expressions of mourning and political attention at a sporting event since the shooting. The race result also prolonged Keselowski's pursuit of a return to victory lane; Keselowski was attempting to end a 51-race winless streak. NASCAR officials and team representatives provided no immediate comment on Bell's dedication.

Authorities continue to investigate the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting as formal charges are prepared. Robinson remains in custody, and Utah law enforcement agencies have said further details will be released as the prosecution works toward filing charges and arranging his initial court appearance.
