Clowney arrested days before signing with Cowboys, then adds veteran edge to Dallas defense

Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney was arrested in his hometown of Rock Hill, South Carolina, just days before he signed with the Dallas Cowboys, authorities said. In York County, deputies allege that the 32-year-old was attempting to park in an apartment complex parking lot that was not open to the public. The charges filed against Clowney are misdemeanors, including trespassing and failure to identify. Clowney told investigators he was trying to visit his aunt, but officials said he was not allowed to park there. After reportedly engaging in an argument with police and refusing to show his identification, Clowney was taken into custody.

The Cowboys announced the signing after their 40-37 Week 2 win over the New York Giants, a move aimed at bolstering Dallas’s pass rush after the team began to seek reinforcements following the departure of Micah Parsons to the Packers. The addition is framed by the organization as adding depth and versatility to the defensive front as it continues to reshape its roster.

Dallas owner Jerry Jones defended the acquisition, saying Clowney is an outstanding player who will bring needed depth to the roster. Jones characterized the signing as a deliberate roster move intended to maximize the club’s immediate chances, noting that Dallas has pursued a strategy of adding multiple players in exchange for key assets to maintain flexibility. He contrasted the move with past roster decisions and reiterated that the club remains focused on building a championship-contending unit for Dak Prescott’s era, while acknowledging that Parsons is a special talent. The comments reflected a broader philosophy of balancing star power with depth as the Cowboys pursue a steady playoff push.

Clowney’s career path is well known in league circles. He was drafted No. 1 overall by the Houston Texans in 2014 and earned Pro Bowl selections in three consecutive seasons from 2016 through 2018. After his time with Houston, he spent stints with several teams, most recently the Panthers last season. In 14 games with Carolina, he recorded 5.5 sacks, 46 tackles and nine tackles for loss.

Clowney told the Cowboys’ official website that he wasn’t worried about the arrest and was focused on moving forward. He said he was excited to join Dallas and contribute to the team’s plans for the coming season. The arrest occurred just days before his signing, and the charges remain misdemeanor offenses.

The acquisition comes as Dallas looks to address the pass-rush void created by the surprise trade of Parsons. Management and coaching staff have suggested they will continue to pursue veteran help to stabilize the defense as the season progresses. Jones’s comments underscored a belief that the move could yield short-term impact while fitting into a longer-term roster-building strategy intended to maximize the team’s competitive window in the Dak Prescott era. Dallas heads to Chicago to face the Bears on Sunday with a 1-1 record.
