Cowboys Sign Jadeveon Clowney to Bolster Pass Rush After Win Over Giants
Three-time Pro Bowler added for depth as Dallas adjusts to Micah Parsons' departure

The Dallas Cowboys signed three-time Pro Bowler Jadeveon Clowney on Sunday, owner Jerry Jones said after the team's 40-37 overtime victory over the New York Giants, a move the club described as added pass-rushing depth following the offseason trade of Micah Parsons.
"He has been an outstanding player, and he'll add some real depth," Jones told reporters, according to ESPN. The signing comes as the Cowboys continue to address roster needs created by Parsons' departure and ongoing questions about their ability to stop the run.
Clowney, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, had started 14 games for the Carolina Panthers last season. He recorded 5 1/2 sacks with Carolina after producing 9 1/2 sacks the previous year with the Baltimore Ravens. The veteran defensive end had been released by the Panthers in May and was not on an NFL roster at the start of the regular season.
Across the first 11 seasons of his career, Clowney has totaled 58 sacks while playing for the Houston Texans (five seasons), Seattle Seahawks (one), Tennessee Titans (one), Cleveland Browns (two), Baltimore Ravens (one) and Carolina Panthers. The move to Dallas is intended to add established pass-rush experience and depth to a front that has been reconfigured since the offseason trade of Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
Parsons was sent to Green Bay in exchange for defensive tackle Kenny Clark and two first-round draft picks, a deal Jones said was in the Cowboys' "best interest." Jones also emphasized the need for Dallas to improve against the run, an area he cited as a motivation for acquiring Clark.
Parsons has made an immediate impact in Green Bay, compiling 1 1/2 sacks and four quarterback hits through the Packers' first two games. The Cowboys' own pass-rush numbers have been mixed: Dallas managed only one sack in a Week 1 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles before recording three sacks of Russell Wilson in Sunday's win over the Giants. Wilson still threw for 450 yards and three touchdowns in that game, and kicker Brandon Aubrey converted a 64-yard field goal at the end of regulation and a 46-yard attempt in overtime to secure the victory.
Clowney's addition is likely to be viewed as a short-term reinforcement rather than a like-for-like replacement for Parsons, who has been a central figure in Dallas' defense. Clowney's experience and previous production make him a credible option to rotate on the edge and provide pass-rushing bursts in key situations.
If Clowney is active in Week 3, he is expected to be part of the Dallas front that will attempt to pressure Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. The Cowboys then travel to face Green Bay in Week 4, a meeting that would reunite Clowney with Parsons when Green Bay comes to AT&T Stadium.
The signing follows a period of roster maneuvering for Dallas as the team balances veteran additions, draft assets and immediate needs. Jones indicated the club structured its roster to enable in-season moves and said the organization would continue to seek ways to improve the roster as the regular season unfolds.
Clowney's career resume and recent productivity give the Cowboys an experienced option on the edge as they seek to convert pressured opportunities into more consistent quarterback disruption. The team will announce Clowney's roster status and potential debut closer to its Week 3 game.
