Crocker beats Donovan to win IBF welterweight title

Lewis Crocker claimed the vacant IBF welterweight title with a split-decision win over Paddy Donovan at Windsor Park in Belfast, the Northern Ireland fighter improving to 22-0. Crocker scored knockdowns in the third and fifth rounds, which proved decisive as two judges scored the bout 114-112 and 114-113 for Crocker while the third gave Donovan a 115-111 verdict.

The result completed a measure of vindication for Crocker in a rematch of their March meeting, which he won by disqualification despite being judged second best during the contest. Donovan, from Limerick, fell to 14-2.

The fight began cautiously as both men felt each other out. Crocker adopted a more measured approach than in their first meeting, keeping distance and looking to draw Donovan's lead hand before countering. Donovan landed late in the opening round, but the contest was tentative through the early stages.

Crocker forced the first knockdown in the third when a countering punch clipped Donovan as he moved in; referee Howard Foster ruled it a knockdown and issued a count. Donovan responded well to finish the round strongly, and the fourth saw the pair exchange simultaneous hooks with both fighters having moments.

The fifth provided the pivotal moment when Crocker found the counter right he had been angling for, putting Donovan on the canvas again. Crocker's overall output remained economical—he relied on measured, accurate shots rather than volume—but those well-timed blows altered the scoring dynamic.

From the sixth through the ninth the fight stayed finely balanced. Donovan used his jab effectively in the middle rounds and had periods of control, particularly in the seventh and ninth, while Crocker landed sharp counters as he circled and looked to exploit openings. Neither man was overwhelmingly dominant in the later rounds, leaving the championship rounds to decide the outcome.

Crocker came forward more in the final third of the fight with a tighter guard, landing a series of right hands to the temple in the 11th that raised the intensity. Donovan remained on the front foot at times in the 12th, varying his attack, but neither produced a definitive late surge and the bout went to the judges after 12 competitive rounds.

The split decision reflected the close nature of the contest and the scoring value of the two knockdowns. Crocker's victory hands him the IBF title and marks a significant milestone in his unbeaten career. For Donovan, the loss represents his first defeat since their earlier meeting and adds to his two-career defeats.

The bout showcased a tactical, restrained fight plan from Crocker in contrast to the more open exchanges seen previously between the pair. The knockdowns in the third and fifth rounds ultimately proved the difference on the cards in an otherwise tightly contested 12-round world-title contest.
