Daniels ruled out; Marcus Mariota to start for Commanders against Raiders

Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn officially ruled star quarterback Jayden Daniels out for Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders with a knee injury. Daniels, in his second season, was limited in practice this week and will miss his first NFL contest due to the injury suffered in Week 2 against the Green Bay Packers.

With Daniels sidelined, Marcus Mariota will start in his place, elevated to QB1 after serving as Washington's primary backup for the last two seasons. The 2014 Heisman Trophy winner will make his first start for the Commanders since joining the team. Quinn said Daniels was limited in practice Friday and would not play, prompting Mariota to take over as Washington's starter for the Raiders game.

Daniels has been a catalyst for Washington's resurgence, leading the team to its best season in more than 30 years and guiding the club to the NFC Championship Game. Coming off a phenomenal rookie season, Daniels had boosted expectations that he would be among the NFL's elite quarterbacks. Washington had hoped his development would fuel sustained success in the years ahead.

This Sunday will be the first NFL game Daniels has missed due to injury, after appearing in all 20 of the Commanders' contests during his rookie season. Daniels' absence creates a pivotal moment for Washington's offense, which had relied on his mobility and big-play ability to drive the attack. Mariota will lead the group as the Commanders aim to maintain momentum on the road against the Raiders.
