Deatrich Wise offers optimistic message after season-ending quad injury

Washington Commanders defensive end Deatrich Wise said Friday he is grateful for the outpouring of support after suffering a gruesome, season-ending quad injury in the second quarter of Thursday’s 27-18 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

The 31-year-old was carted off the field surrounded by teammates, many of whom took a knee, after the injury occurred while he attempted to block a Brandon McManus extra-point attempt and a Packers lineman fell back onto his leg. Wise started both of Washington’s games this season.

Wise, who signed a one-year, $5 million deal with Washington after eight seasons with the New England Patriots, posted a carousel of images on Instagram on Friday that included photos of the injury, him raising a fist while being carted off and pictures of his family. He wrote, "I’m truly grateful for all the love, prayers, and support I’ve received," and added that the experience, though unfortunate, offered perspective.

"When you give so much to the game and do everything you can to improve for yourself and for your team’s success it can feel like there’s a lot to play for," Wise wrote. "When you stop, it can feel like everything around you stops too." He also invoked his faith, writing, "But I know the best healer. God only puts us through what we can handle, and every challenge carries a lesson. Out of every test comes growth, shaping us into who we need to become to accomplish the goals we set from the start."

The team said Wise is expected to undergo surgery. The Commanders did not immediately provide a timetable for his recovery. Wise noted a positive in the setback, saying it will allow him more time with his family.

The injury removes a veteran presence from Washington’s defensive line early in the season. Wise, a 31-year-old defensive end, had been a starter in both of the Commanders’ opening games after joining the club following a lengthy stint in New England. The club will now evaluate its front‑seven depth as it prepares for its next game.

Wise’s post emphasized resilience and a focus on recovery rather than dwelling on the incident. He wrote that he is "on the path to becoming the highest version of myself" and said the enforced time away from play will allow him to "spend time with my family and my sons."

The Commanders continue their season without Wise while he prepares for surgery and rehabilitation; the team has not released further medical details or an estimated return date.
