Deatrich Wise Ruled Out for Season After Leg Injury, Posts Emotional Statement
Commanders defensive lineman was carted off at Lambeau Field during a 27-18 loss to the Packers; Washington also lost running back Austin Ekeler to an Achilles injury

Washington Commanders defensive lineman Deatrich Wise has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering a severe leg injury during Thursday night’s 27-18 loss to the Green Bay Packers, and posted an emotional message to fans on social media.
Wise, 31, was injured while attempting to block an extra-point attempt by Packers kicker Brandon McManus in the second quarter at Lambeau Field. Medics and teammates attended to him on the field, and he was carted off as the crowd fell silent. He had been officially ruled out for the game before the team later announced he would miss the rest of the season.
In an Instagram post after the game, Wise thanked fans for their support and reflected on the challenge. "I'm truly grateful for all the love, prayers, and support I've received," he wrote. "This was an unfortunate experience, but when you give so much to the game and do everything you can to improve for yourself and for your team's success it can feel like there's a lot to play for. When you stop, it can feel like everything around you stops too. Out of every test comes growth, shaping us into who we need to become to accomplish the goals we set from the start. I’m on the path to becoming the highest version of myself. And on the bright side I get spend on time with my family and my sons."
Wise signed with Washington in March on a one-year, $3.25 million deal after spending the first eight seasons of his career with the New England Patriots, who selected him in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. The defensive lineman, a veteran presence expected to bolster the Commanders' front, had at least five sacks in three different seasons and recorded two solo tackles, a tackle for loss and a quarterback hit in Washington’s Week 1 win over the New York Giants.
The injury added to a night of significant setbacks for Washington. Running back Austin Ekeler, who had been listed atop the team’s depth chart after starting six games last season, went down with what appeared to be a non-contact right-leg injury in the second half and was carted off. The Commanders confirmed Ekeler suffered an Achilles injury; the team did not immediately disclose the full severity. Tight end John Bates and receiver Noah Brown also exited the game with injuries.
Coach and team representatives did not immediately provide a detailed medical timeline for Wise’s recovery. The loss of Wise removes an experienced defensive lineman from Washington’s rotation, depriving the team of a player brought in for veteran leadership and pass-rush depth. The Commanders will now face roster and lineup decisions as they navigate a series of injuries sustained in the early portion of the season.
The Packers’ win at Lambeau Field marked a difficult night for Washington’s offense and defense, as the team contended with multiple injuries that could influence its short-term plans. The Commanders are scheduled to return to practice and review medical evaluations in the coming days as they assess the scope of each player’s injuries and potential roster moves.
Wise’s statement emphasized family and personal growth amid the setback, and he pledged to work toward his recovery while spending time with his sons. Teammates and opponents alike have responded to the incident on social media and in postgame comments, noting the seriousness of the injury and expressing support for Wise and the other injured players. The Commanders’ front office and medical staff will provide further updates as examinations and evaluations continue.
