Emma Raducanu withdraws from Billie Jean King Cup to take Seoul wildcard, leaves Team GB startled

Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from Great Britain’s Billie Jean King Cup squad for this month’s finals in Shenzhen and will instead accept a wildcard into the Korea Open in Seoul, British media reported Friday.

The decision, described by reports as a surprise to Team GB management, was said to have been relayed to the team captain only on the morning of the announcement. Raducanu’s absence removes Britain’s highest-ranked player from a tie in which the nation will bid to win its first BJK Cup title.

Raducanu was Britain’s most successful singles player in the competition last year, winning all her matches as Great Britain reached the semi-finals in Malaga. Her withdrawal for the finals follows a similar decision in April, when she pulled out of group-stage ties against Germany and the Netherlands. That earlier withdrawal came after a busy tournament schedule and an incident in which Raducanu reported an encounter with a stalker; she cited a need to rest.

Katie Boulter and Sonay Kartal helped Britain qualify for the finals after stepping up during the group stage in April, and they are expected to lead the team in Shenzhen in Raducanu’s absence. Team GB will now proceed without its current national No. 1, a development that alters selection options and match planning for captain and coaching staff.

The Korea Open wildcard places Raducanu in a WTA tournament that overlaps with the BJK Cup finals, giving her the opportunity to compete for ranking points and match play outside the team event. British media coverage framed the choice as notable because it removes a marquee player from a rare chance to contend for a first national title at the team competition.

This is the latest scheduling and availability question surrounding players balancing individual tour events and national team commitments. The Billie Jean King Cup finals are scheduled for later this month in Shenzhen; the Korea Open in Seoul begins around the same time, presenting a direct calendar conflict.

Great Britain’s team management did not immediately issue a detailed comment beyond confirming Raducanu’s withdrawal. Tournament organisers and Raducanu’s team have not released further public statements on the motives for accepting the Seoul wildcard beyond the reports published Friday.

Raducanu, who rose to prominence as the 2021 US Open champion, has had intermittent availability for team competitions in recent seasons due to her individual schedule and other off-court matters. Her absence will place greater responsibility on the remaining squad members as Britain pursues a deep run in the BJK Cup finals.

The Billie Jean King Cup brings together national teams in a knockout format; Britain reached the semi-finals in 2024 with Raducanu contributing in singles. The team’s schedule and line-up for Shenzhen will be finalised in the coming days, with selectors and coaches expected to confirm their playing order ahead of the first ties.
