England rout Scotland 40-8 to reach Rugby World Cup semi-finals, extend winning streak to 31

England secured a commanding 40-8 victory over Scotland in Bristol on Sunday to reach the Rugby World Cup semi-finals and extend their Test winning streak to a record 31 consecutive matches. The win sets up a last-four meeting with France, who earlier overcame Ireland 18-13 in similarly poor weather.

Scotland opened the scoring through a Helen Nelson penalty, but England quickly seized control in a rain-soaked contest as Kelsey Clifford crossed twice and Morwenna Talling barged over to put the hosts well ahead. Abby Dow also touched down — her 50th international try in 57 Tests — after a misplaced pass from Holly Aitchison opened space on the outside, and England led 26-3 at half-time.

England continued to control the second half as Amy Cokayne powered over from a driven line-out and Aitchison finished a move to make the final margin emphatic. Aitchison added five conversions in the victory. Scotland’s resilience was rewarded with a late try from Rhona Lloyd on the final play, but the consolation score did little to change the outcome.

Clifford did not return after a head injury assessment at the 45th minute, a precaution that saw England finish the match without one of their key try-scorers on the field. The home side nonetheless maintained intensity and clinical finishing in difficult conditions, while Scotland showed determination despite being comprehensively beaten.

The result extends England’s winning run to 31 Tests, surpassing the sequence they set on the way to the 2022 World Cup final. England’s only defeat in recent years remains the 2022 final loss to New Zealand; that defeat is the sole loss in their last 62 matches, a stretch that dates back to 2019.

Scotland head coach and players confronted the twin blows of tournament exit and change. Number eight Jade Konkel concluded a 12-year international career with 74 caps; Konkel, who became Scotland’s first professional women’s player in 2016, confirmed her Test career ended with the defeat. The future of several other Scotland squad members was left uncertain, with reports that around half the squad have contracts that may be nearing expiry when the competition concludes.

England head coach praised the players’ physicality and decision-making in the conditions while England’s attack was highlighted for converting pressure into points across the park. Scotland were undermanned in the forwards at times and struggled to match England’s front-foot momentum, though the visitors continued to compete until the final whistle.

England named a starting XV that included Hannah Rowland at full-back, Dow and Jess Breach on the wings, and Aitchison at fly-half, with Clifford and Cokayne among the back-row and front-row finishers. Scotland started with Rachael Rollie in goal and Rhona Lloyd and Fran McGhie on the wings; Konkel captained the pack from number eight. Both teams used a full complement of replacements during the match as coaches managed fitness in difficult conditions.

England now prepare to face France in a semi-final rematch of previous World Cup encounters, with France having advanced after their narrow victory over Ireland earlier on Sunday. The semi-final pairing will be played at a venue and date set by tournament organizers, with expectations high for another intense knockout contest between two of the competition favourites.
