England rout Serbia 5-0 in Belgrade as Tuchel faces selection headaches

England produced a commanding 5-0 victory over Serbia in Belgrade on Tuesday, leaving manager Thomas Tuchel with welcome selection dilemmas as the side moved closer to World Cup qualification.

The win, achieved at the Rajko Mitić Stadium, put England five points away from qualifying with three qualifiers remaining. Harry Kane opened the scoring and finished the night with his 74th international goal, while Noni Madueke, Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi all scored their first England goals in a match that silenced a normally hostile home crowd.

Tuchel, who acknowledged before the game that he had learned from his first two England camps and was looking to increase competition for places, saw several fringe or less-capped players press their claims. Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer and Phil Foden were absent, but their replacements helped produce a performance the manager described as the product of a "brilliant camp." Tuchel said the players "proved a point every day in camp, and the team did it again with their performance."

Noni Madueke scored and impressed with his individual display, bringing his England return to five goal contributions in nine appearances. Elliott Anderson, who made his debut against Andorra, produced a composed midfield display and received praise from Tuchel. Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers also showed increasing influence and adaptability in an England shirt.

Opta statistics underpinned Anderson's impact: he completed 182 passes across his first two England appearances — 107 against Andorra and 75 against Serbia — the most by an England midfielder in his first two caps on Opta records dating back to August 2008. England's starting XI in Belgrade contained only four players with 25 or more caps, while four had single-figure caps, reflecting Tuchel's rotation and experimentation.

England dominated the match in all phases. Jordan Pickford registered a seventh consecutive clean sheet, having nothing to save as Serbia failed to register a shot on target. England finished with 24 attempts overall and 12 on target, and enjoyed 42 touches inside the Serbian penalty area compared with Serbia's four.

The win was England's eighth consecutive competitive victory and marked the first time any side had scored five goals in an away competitive fixture against Serbia. Kane's opening strike set the tone early, and the team quickly asserted control, limiting Serbia's chances and silencing the crowd from the outset.

There were, however, unsavoury incidents during the match. Play was halted in the first half after green lasers were directed at Ezri Konsa, and late in the game there was fighting among home supporters, who at times chanted in protest at Serbian political figures. Those disturbances did not affect the course of the match.

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, reporting for BBC Radio 5 Live from Belgrade, praised the collective display, saying that when big names are absent "the team becomes the star" and that the side executed Tuchel's plan "to the nth degree." Tuchel acknowledged he had used his early camps to learn about the squad and said future camps would focus on increasing competition before narrowing selections.

Tuchel now faces decisions on how to balance established stars and in-form alternatives ahead of the remaining qualifiers. The performance in Belgrade provides him with multiple options in attacking and midfield roles and evidence that his selection rotations can produce cohesion and results.

England will return to qualifying action with their next fixture still to come in the final three matches of the group. The emphatic win in Belgrade offered reassurance about depth and adaptability as Tuchel prepares his squad for the run-in towards the 2026 World Cup.
