England rule out immediate recall for Mason Greenwood as international future remains undecided

England have not initiated contact with Mason Greenwood and have no current plans to offer the former Manchester United forward a route back into the national team, amid continued uncertainty over his international allegiance.

Jamaica head coach Steve McClaren had said he expected Greenwood to join the Reggae Boyz for two upcoming World Cup qualifiers after the 23-year-old obtained a Jamaican passport. Greenwood informed Jamaica this week that he would take more time to determine his international future and wants to concentrate on his club form with Marseille.

Thomas Tuchel, Greenwood's Marseille manager, said he had not been in contact with the forward or his representatives over an England return and understood Greenwood was considering playing for Jamaica. "I have not spoken to him or his camp," Tuchel said. "My understanding was that he tries to play for Jamaica so we didn't give it another thought."

Greenwood has started the season in France with one goal and two assists in three Ligue 1 appearances, after scoring 21 goals for Marseille across all competitions last season. His decision on international allegiance would determine whether he could represent England again or commit to Jamaica ahead of upcoming qualifiers.

An FA spokesperson confirmed there are currently no discussions underway about reinstating Greenwood to an England squad. The association has previously been cautious in its public comments on the player's situation.

McClaren had expected Greenwood to link up with Jamaica in the coming days for qualifiers that are part of the Caribbean nation's qualifying campaign for the next World Cup. Jamaica secured a passport for Greenwood earlier this year, a procedural step that would permit him to play for the country if he chose to switch his international allegiance.

Greenwood's international eligibility has become a point of interest since his move to Marseille following his departure from Manchester United. Any final decision on his future would need to adhere to FIFA rules governing national-team switches and player eligibility.

For now, Greenwood will remain focused on his club commitments in Ligue 1 as he weighs his international options. Both England and Jamaica will continue preparation for their respective international fixtures while awaiting a definitive statement from the player or his representatives.
