England-Serbia qualifier halted after lasers aimed at England players; Three Lions win 5-0 in Belgrade

England's World Cup qualifying match in Belgrade was temporarily halted in the 38th minute after members of the crowd shone laser lights at visiting players, officials said, but the Three Lions resumed and completed a 5-0 victory.

The pause came after lasers were directed at defenders Reece James and Ezri Konsa, with a social media clip showing Konsa putting his hands to his eyes while driving forward with possession. Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, reporting on BBC Radio Five Live, described seeing a green laser flash on Konsa's shirt and said Konsa "immediately stopped." The referee halted the game amid jeers from the crowd.

England, managed by Thomas Tuchel, led 2-0 when play was stopped, with Harry Kane opening the scoring before Noni Madueke — who netted his first international goal — converted a flicked assist from Morgan Rogers. After the break, Ezri Konsa made it 3-0 with his maiden England goal, Marc Guehi added a fourth in the 75th minute, and Marcus Rashford later sealed the win from the penalty spot.

The match was played at the Rajko Mitic Stadium in front of a reduced crowd after Serbian supporters received sanctions earlier this year following racist abuse directed at Andorra's players. The behaviour of the home supporters had been a talking point in the build-up to the fixture; England captain Kane had said in his pre-match press conference that the team would walk off if they were subjected to racial abuse, referencing UEFA protocols used in previous incidents.

Play resumed after the stoppage and the referee allowed the match to continue following consultation with match officials. There was no immediate indication that any players sustained injury from the laser exposure, and England completed the contest without further interruption.

The comprehensive away victory keeps England top of their qualifying group on 15 points with three games remaining. The result extends Tuchel's side's winning run in the campaign and provides a boost as the team pursue automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

UEFA and the match authorities are expected to review footage from the game as part of routine post-match procedures. Laser use and crowd misconduct have drawn increased scrutiny from governing bodies in recent seasons, and disciplinary measures have been applied in instances where supporter behaviour breached regulations.

Serbia faced immediate criticism for the actions of some fans during the match. Serbian football authorities have previously been sanctioned for supporter misconduct, and the national federation imposed a reduced-capacity sanction for this fixture as a result of incidents earlier in the year.

England's next qualifying fixtures are scheduled as the campaign enters its final phase, with Tuchel's squad looking to maintain momentum and secure their place in next summer's tournament. The Football Association and UEFA did not immediately release detailed statements about the stoppage, but officials routinely review such incidents and may open disciplinary proceedings if regulations were breached.
