England Under-21s confront spectator alleged to have filmed players in changing area in Kazakhstan

England’s Under-21 players confronted a spectator who appeared to be filming them through a partially obscured window of the away changing area after Monday’s 2-0 win in Kazakhstan, footage shared on social media shows.

The match, at the Ortalyq Stadion, opened England’s qualifying campaign for the 2027 European Under-21 Championship and saw Ethan Nwaneri and Jobe Bellingham score for Lee Carsley’s side. Videos posted online show several England players, some as young as 18, reacting angrily and trying to block the camera.

In the clip, a spectator is seen pointing a camera at a window that provides a view into the changing room and is partly obscured by shutters. Nwaneri is recorded throwing a towel at the window in an attempt to block the camera while Tottenham midfielder Archie Gray can be seen motioning toward the individual. A player places a towel over part of the window, after which the person filming lifts the device above the towel to regain a view into the room.

The footage does not carry a verified time stamp and it is unclear precisely when it was recorded. News organisations contacted by the video’s original poster reported that the incident occurred on the same day as the match, but no independent confirmation has been published. Daily Mail Sport said it had contacted the Football Association for comment.

England’s win in Kazakhstan kept the reigning champions’ qualifying campaign on track. England won the Under-21 European Championship in both 2023 and 2025 and now begin Group D play against Moldova on Wednesday. The group also contains Slovakia, the Republic of Ireland and Andorra. Group winners will advance directly to the 2027 finals in Albania and Serbia, while runners-up enter playoffs.

The FA has previously maintained policies on privacy and security for players at international fixtures, and national associations and event organisers are responsible for providing secure facilities for teams. There was no immediate public response from the FA or Kazakhstan match organisers about the footage when contacted.

The social-media clip prompted discussion among followers of England’s youth programme about player welfare and stadium security at away matches. The England Under-21 squad includes a mix of Premier League academy products and young professionals; personnel on the pitch on Monday ranged from teenagers to more experienced 21-year-olds. Carsley’s squad will continue its qualifying schedule with the Moldova fixture as it seeks to defend the title it won in the two most recent editions of the tournament.
