ESPN plans internal hunt for First Take replacement after Molly Qerim's exit

Molly Qerim is leaving ESPN’s First Take after more than a decade, the network confirmed this week. Qerim announced the decision on social media after reports that she would depart leaked online earlier in the week.

ESPN president of content Burke Magnus said the network anticipated a change but focused on the end-of-year timeline. He said the network will spend about 30 to 45 days testing in-house talent on the show to determine who best fits its fast-paced format, with a decision coming shortly after that window. "While we knew we were going to make a change — her deal ran through the end of the year — we were more focused on that timeline," Magnus said. He added that even if Qerim had signed a new contract, she would have still been off First Take by year’s end, calling the exit a matter of "contract negotiations falling apart." Stephen A. Smith will host as a temporary measure during the transition, as ESPN sorts out next steps.

The network signaled that the next full-time host is likely already on ESPN’s roster, with testing focused on internal candidates. Names in the mix include Shae Cornette, Christine Williamson, Courtney Cronin and Monica McNutt — all of whom are considered strong internal contenders.

If ESPN pursues an external hire at all, it is not guaranteed. But Magnus pointed to the likelihood that the eventual replacement may come from within the company rather than outside.

As for Qerim’s future with ESPN, it remains unclear whether she will return in any capacity before her contract expires this summer.

The shift comes as ESPN continues to refine its daytime studio lineup and seek a balance between a high-energy debate format and steady leadership in a show that has long been a marquee for the network.
