Falcons fire Ike Hilliard after 30-0 loss to Panthers; Yates promoted to passing game coordinator
Team shakeup comes as Atlanta's passing attack struggles early in the season

The Atlanta Falcons fired wide receivers coach Ike Hilliard on Monday night after Sunday’s 30-0 loss to the Carolina Panthers, the team announced. The move comes as passing game coordinator T.J. Yates was promoted to assume Hilliard's duties, effective immediately, in a bid to stabilize an offense that has shown inconsistent production through three games.
Atlanta entered the season hoping to build on the promise shown by quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who replaced Kirk Cousins. Through three games, Penix has thrown for 605 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. The Falcons have struggled to stretch the field, leaving star running back Bijan Robinson as the team’s leading receiver with 14 catches for 164 yards and one receiving touchdown. Drake London has 16 receptions for 159 yards, while Ray-Ray McCloud III and Darnell Mooney have combined for 135 yards.
Against Carolina, the Falcons failed to muster any offense, producing a 30-0 defeat on the road. Penix threw for 172 yards on 18-of-36 passing, while the receiving group struggled to connect with the second-year quarterback. London and Mooney combined for nine catches and 99 yards, continuing a dip in production compared with last season, when London posted 1,271 receiving yards and a 100-catch effort. The failure to generate a consistent passing attack is underscored by the fact that Robinson's 164 receiving yards are the bulk of the team's passing game through three games.
Hilliard, who joined the Falcons ahead of the 2024 season after spending time as a receivers coach with the Steelers, Commanders and Bills, was a former Giants first-round pick. Drafted No. 7 in 1997, Hilliard totaled 368 receptions for 4,630 yards and 27 touchdowns in eight seasons with New York and started 14 games for the 2000 Giants squad that reached the Super Bowl against the Ravens. The team said Yates, who previously held Hilliard’s responsibilities, will move into the passing game coordinator role with expanded duties.

Looking ahead, the Falcons will try to avoid a 1-3 start when they host the Washington Commanders in Week 4. DraftKings has Washington favored by 2.5 points on the road, reflecting a challenging matchup as Atlanta looks to stabilize an offense that has underperformed through the early part of the season.

The coaching staff shakeup and the continued evaluation of the passing game come as Atlanta seeks to salvage its 2025 campaign, with Yates stepping into a broader role as the team attempts to reinvigorate a group that has yet to meet expectations through the season’s first quarter.
