Fan Crawls Across Giant American Flag During National Anthem at Jets-Steelers Opener

A fan crawled across a giant American flag that covered the field during the national anthem before the New York Jets' season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, drawing surprised looks from players and a flurry of social-media posts.

Video posted by fans shows the man moving across the red and white stripes toward the visiting sideline before climbing off the flag in front of several Pittsburgh players. The incident occurred during the pregame anthem at the Jets' home opener and prompted laughter and confusion in the stands and on the field.

Fans captured and circulated the footage on X, including a clip posted by the account @momof2boys99. Social posts showed the man crawling along the flag's stripes and then stepping off near the Steelers' bench as anthem music continued and stadium staff and security appeared to react.

The unusual pregame moment preceded a competitive opener. The Jets led 26-17 through three quarters, bolstered by one passing and one rushing touchdown from new quarterback Justin Fields. Pittsburgh's Aaron Rodgers threw two scoring passes early in the fourth quarter, giving the Steelers a 31-26 lead.

The game marked the Jets' first under new head coach Aaron Glenn as they pursue an NFL-high 14-year playoff drought. The anthem disruption drew attention for its oddity but did not appear to delay the scheduled kickoff or otherwise alter the game's start.

There was no immediate public comment from Jets or Steelers representatives or from stadium officials about the identity of the man or whether any enforcement action was taken. Stadium security typically handles field intrusions, but the publicly available footage shows the individual leaving the flag and moving off the field without a prolonged confrontation.

The moment added an unexpected note to what was already being framed as a significant season opener for both clubs: the Jets with a new coaching staff and quarterbacking combination, and the Steelers featuring Rodgers as they sought to open their campaign with a win. Social-media reaction ranged from amusement to bewilderment as the play-for-play and postgame coverage quickly shifted back to on-field events and the late-game comeback by Pittsburgh.
