Fan Who Fell 21 Feet at PNC Park Says, 'Don't Know How I'm Alive'

Kavan Markwood, the 20-year-old fan who fell more than 20 feet from the bleachers onto the warning-track dirt during a Pittsburgh Pirates game in April, said he is still recovering and grateful to be alive after the fall that was captured on viral video.

Markwood walked around PNC Park for the first time since the incident and told Inside Edition that he wakes up in pain and still has lingering numbness in two fingers. "I don't know how I'm alive," he said, adding that he is "doing better than what I was." The grounds crew removed him from the field after he landed motionless on the warning track and players from both the Pirates and the visiting Chicago Cubs were visibly distraught when the footage circulated.

Medical personnel diagnosed Markwood with multiple serious injuries after several "touch-and-go" days, according to his account. He said he suffered a broken neck, a broken clavicle and a broken back, and that he also sustained a punctured lung and multiple broken ribs. Markwood has described feeling pain daily as he continues his recovery.

Markwood told Inside Edition he did not jump over a railing and called the episode "a tragic accident." He said he got excited and "fell" after flipping over a fence. His girlfriend told police he had consumed two beers, and his brother, Ethan Markwood, has been charged with multiple counts of providing alcohol to a minor in connection with the incident.

The fall, widely shared on social media, prompted immediate concern from players and fans at PNC Park. The video shows Markwood tumbling down the bleachers and landing on the dirt near the field. Team staff and emergency personnel responded quickly at the scene, and the grounds crew helped move him off the playing surface.

Markwood said he wanted to make clear that the fall was not intentional. "I just hope everyone knows that I fell and I didn't jump over the railing," he said. He also acknowledged friends had bought him drinks that night, saying, "my buddy bought him some beers," and reiterated his belief that the incident was an accident rather than an intentional act.

The episode has drawn attention to fan safety at ballparks after the dramatic footage circulated online. While park officials and team personnel are responsible for immediate response and medical care during games, the investigation into the circumstances that led to Markwood's fall also included a police review of alcohol consumption and potential responsibility for providing alcohol to a minor.

Ethan Markwood's charges allege he provided alcohol to a minor; authorities have not publicly detailed the status of the case beyond the filing of counts, and court proceedings are expected to address those allegations. Kavan Markwood has focused publicly on recovery, describing the physical toll of his injuries and signaling gratitude for the help he received at the stadium that night.

As he continues treatment, Markwood said he still struggles with pain and loss of sensation in his hand but is recovering incrementally. The incident remains a vivid reminder of the risks spectators can face at live sporting events and has prompted renewed attention to how venues manage both medical emergencies and the consumption of alcohol by underage fans.

The Pirates and stadium officials have not issued new public statements beyond initial responses at the scene, and team representatives have not provided updates on any changes to stadium procedures tied directly to this incident. The viral video and the resulting legal case involving Markwood's brother have kept the episode in the public eye as the fan recovers and legal authorities pursue related charges.
