Former Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom details 2020 stabbing and its effect on his career

Former Liverpool and England youth defender Andre Wisdom has described the attack in June 2020 that left him stabbed multiple times, saying the incident altered the course of his career and still causes him physical pain.

Wisdom, who came through Liverpool’s academy and made 22 senior appearances for the club, told BBC Sport that he had been at a private gathering in Liverpool during the Covid-19 lockdown on the night of June 28, 2020. He had played earlier that day for Derby County in a 2-1 win over Reading at Pride Park, a match played behind closed doors, and said he should have been resting at home rather than attending the party.

Describing the attack, Wisdom said he was leaving the party alone when five masked men confronted him in the street and demanded his watch. "They said: 'Give us your watch.' I said no and a fight started," he told BBC Sport. Wisdom said he did not have time to run and that he was left "covered in blood on the street" after the assailants fled. He added that adrenalin carried him through a 15- to 20-minute drive home but that only then did he realise how badly he had been hurt.

Wisdom said he was stabbed in the head, chest, buttocks and left thigh, and that when he checked the wound to his thigh "the muscle was almost hanging out." He underwent surgery and recovered enough to return to play for Derby, but he said the episode "definitely changed" his career. "Who knows where I'd be playing today had I not been stabbed," Wisdom told BBC Sport. "I wouldn't say that night ruined my career, but it definitely changed it. To this day I still have pain in my body from being stabbed."

Police investigations did not identify or apprehend the attackers, and Wisdom has said the incident remains a painful memory. He has been candid about his role in attending the gathering while lockdown rules were in place, telling BBC Sport, "I shouldn't have been there. I should have been at home recovering after the game, but it was lockdown and I was eager to be outside."

After his recovery, Wisdom continued his professional career but struggled to regain a long-term foothold in the English Football League. Derby released him in 2021, and he had trials with Portsmouth, Sheffield United and Birmingham City without securing a permanent contract. In 2023 he signed for non-league Warrington Town, later spent a short spell with Derry City and, as of 2025, plays for FC United of Manchester in the seventh tier of English football.

A highly rated youngster at Liverpool, Wisdom scored on his senior debut at 19 and captained England’s under-21s. He has since diversified his activities off the pitch and invested in property in the Liverpool area, renting houses to young players. Wisdom told reporters that one of his properties was occupied by a future Liverpool first-team player prior to that player's breakthrough.

Wisdom said he remains determined to look forward despite the lasting physical effects of the attack. The incident and its aftermath illustrate the narrow margins that can shape a professional footballer's career and the personal consequences of decisions made during an extraordinary period of restricted social activity.

The former Liverpool academy graduate continues to play at the semi-professional level while managing the long-term impact of the injuries he sustained in 2020.
