Syracuse coach Fran Brown ordered his entire team to run sprints on the field after the Orange survived an overtime test, 27-20, against UConn on Sept. 6 at the JMA Wireless Dome, saying he was "so pissed" at the team's overall effort despite the victory.

Quarterback Steve Angeli threw the overtime touchdown pass that sealed the win, but Brown said the result was not the source of his anger. He singled out fundamentals and effort, telling reporters, "Guys not running to get lined up, guys not running to the ball. I just want to celebrate the win with the people, but I'm so pissed. I'm mad as heck right now."

Brown, in his second season leading the program, said he was acting out of a desire to hold the team to a standard of play he expects. "I was taught through a lot of the coaches that coached me, you either coach it or allow it, so I feel that I’m allowing it. There’s just some things that I gotta do. I just want to hold them to the standard of who they are," he said.

Rather than heading immediately to the locker room and celebrations, Syracuse players remained on the field and ran conditioning sprints in view of the crowd. The scene drew attention for its intensity and for Brown's frank postgame remarks as his team recorded what Syracuse described as its first win of the season.

The move underscored Brown's emphasis on accountability early in the season. He has repeatedly spoken about establishing a culture of consistent effort and attention to detail since taking over the program, and the postgame workouts were presented as part of that approach.

Angeli's late play provided the immediate highlight: his touchdown pass in overtime gave Syracuse the edge after a game that required extra time to decide. Brown's insistence on addressing perceived lapses in execution came amid praise for the win itself, balancing celebration of the result with criticism of how the team achieved it.

Brown's actions and comments fed into broader conversations about discipline and standards in college football programs, particularly for teams seeking to rebound or establish consistency. He did not announce any further disciplinary measures after the sprints, and he reiterated that his goal was maintaining the standards he believes Syracuse should meet on and off the field.

Syracuse will look to build on the overtime win as it continues its early-season schedule, while Brown's postgame decision is likely to remain a talking point as observers assess the program's trajectory under his leadership.
