Freese signs contract extension with NYCFC through 2030
U.S. national team breakout goalkeeper commits long-term future to New York City FC after standout Gold Cup run, adding to a growing stability at the club.

New York City FC announced Thursday that goalkeeper Matt Freese has signed a contract extension that will keep him in New York through the end of 2030. The 27-year-old, who emerged as a breakout star for the United States during this summer's Gold Cup, announced the news during Men in Blazers Live in New York at Terminal 5, prompting an eruption of cheers from NYCFC fans in attendance.
Freese has developed into a keystone for NYCFC since arriving ahead of the 2023 season. He has appeared in 83 matches and made 275 saves with 20 clean sheets across all competitions. He was named NYCFC's club MVP in 2024. Through MLS play this season, he has helped the club to 15 wins, with NYCFC sitting in fifth place in the Eastern Conference. "We’re thrilled to have secured Matt's future with the Club through this contract extension," sporting director David Lee said in a club statement. "Over the past two seasons, he has not only established himself as one of MLS' premier goalkeepers but also a distinguished role model on-and-off the field. His character, leadership, and professionalism set a strong foundation for the Club, and we believe he will remain a cornerstone of our team for many years to come." Freese credited the NYCFC roster, along with the direction of Lee and head coach Pascal Jansen, as part of what made him want to stay in New York.

On the national level, Freese started all six Gold Cup matches for the United States, recording two shutouts as the Americans advanced to the Final before losing to Mexico. The run elevated him into the conversation for the starting job at next summer's World Cup, underscoring his continued growth at NYCFC and his value to the national team.
As Freese enters what is expected to be the prime years of his career, the extension provides NYCFC with a stable core around the goalkeeper and reinforces the club's planning under head coach Pascal Jansen and sporting director David Lee. The club has leaned on Freese to help drive one of MLS' best defensive records this season, and the extension ensures continuity as NYCFC chases MLS success and a deep playoff run.
