Gareth Bale to play in star-studded charity match in Seoul after two-year retirement

Gareth Bale will return to the pitch this weekend to play in a star-studded charity match in Seoul, two and a half years after announcing his retirement from professional football.

The 36-year-old former Tottenham and Real Madrid forward is due to feature for FC Spear against Shield United in an "attack v defence" format at the Seoul World Cup Stadium on Saturday. Organisers say the fixture will pit attacking legends against a side of defensive greats in a high-profile exhibition match.

FC Spear's squad of attacking talents includes Ronaldinho, Kaka, Wayne Rooney and Eden Hazard, with Didier Drogba, Steven Gerrard and Franck Ribery also listed alongside goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. The team is set to be managed by Arsene Wenger. Shield United, representing defence, features Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Ashley Cole, Carles Puyol and Alessandro Nesta and will be coached by Rafa Benitez. Last year's edition of the event ended with Shield United defeating the attackers 4-1.

Bale retired in January 2023 following a brief spell with Los Angeles FC and after captaining Wales at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He finished his international career as Wales' record appearance maker and goalscorer with 41 goals in 111 games. During his club career he won the UEFA Champions League five times and LaLiga three times with Real Madrid, was twice named PFA Players' Player of the Year while at Tottenham and won the MLS Cup and Supporters' Shield with LAFC.

Organisers billed the match as a charity fixture and a celebration of football careers; Bale's participation follows continued involvement in the sport since retirement. He has joined TNT Sports' punditry line-up, replacing Rio Ferdinand in the network's coverage, and was linked with a potential takeover bid for Cardiff City during the summer, though no deal has been finalised.

Match organisers did not disclose the specific charities to benefit in the latest announcement. Ticketing and broadcast arrangements were released by the event promoters and local partners; further details are available through official channels.

Bale's appearance in Seoul will be his first notable on-field involvement since retiring from professional competition and underscores the continued appeal of exhibition fixtures that bring together former stars for charitable and promotional purposes.
