Geraint Thomas to End Career on Home Roads as Thousands Expected for Final Tour of Britain Stage

Geraint Thomas will bring his professional cycling career to a close on home roads when the Tour of Britain concludes in Cardiff on Sunday, with thousands expected to line streets across south Wales for the final stage.

The 39-year-old, the 2018 Tour de France champion and an Olympic gold medallist, will retire when the race finishes after a 122.2km stage that begins at the Newport velodrome named in his honour and passes the Maindy Flyers club where he began cycling before ending in his hometown. "The last stage goes within 100 metres of my mum and dad's house, past the pub where I had my first pint," Thomas said. "I'm just lucky the Tour of Britain comes at the end of the season so I can finish my career on home roads. It will be an amazing way to finish."

Organisers and local authorities have anticipated large crowds along the south Wales route, with fans expected to gather at key points including Newport, the route past Maindy and the finish in Cardiff. The final stage will mark the end of Thomas's season and his professional career after more than a decade at the top level of the sport.

Thomas is currently 86th in the Tour of Britain standings, more than 16 minutes behind overall leader Romain Gregoire following Saturday's fifth stage, an "emotional" day that finished between Pontypool and the climb at The Tumble. Thomas described the atmosphere on that stage as extraordinary. "It was a special day, the crowds were amazing," he said. "Coming up the climb was mad. It felt like every person on there was cheering for me, which was crazy."

The decision to retire at the end of the season allows Thomas to finish on a familiar stage rather than during the Grand Tour calendar and provides local fans a final chance to see a hometown rider who rose through British cycling ranks. Thomas first came to prominence in track cycling with Olympic success and later transitioned to road racing, achieving the sport's highest prize with his 2018 Tour de France victory.

Race organisers noted the symbolism of the final stage beginning at the Newport velodrome that bears Thomas's name and routed to pass his childhood club. Local cycling clubs and community groups have helped publicise viewing points and safety measures for spectators, and officials urged fans to follow stewarding and policing advice to ensure a safe finish for participants and onlookers alike.

As the Tour of Britain reaches its finale, attention will focus on the celebrations planned in Cardiff and on how a national sporting figure chooses to conclude a prominent career. Thomas's final professional kilometres are expected to be contested in a charged atmosphere that blends competition with tribute, drawing supporters who have followed his progress from Maindy Flyers to the top of international cycling.
