Gerrard tipped for Wrexham manager role after disappointing Championship start

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has been tipped to become Wrexham’s next manager, with Manchester United legend Bryan Robson suggesting the Welsh club’s profile could suit him. The speculation comes eight months after Gerrard left Saudi side Al-Ettifaq and follows a challenging start to life in the Championship for Wrexham.

Gerrard, who departed Al-Ettifaq in January 2025 after 18 months at the helm, has remained out of work since. In Saudi Arabia, Al-Ettifaq won five of 17 games and sat 12th in a 16-team league, just above the relegation zone. Gerrard’s reputation, however, rests on his earlier success at Rangers, where he guided an unbeaten league campaign and their first Scottish title in a decade in 2020-21 before moving to the Premier League with Aston Villa. He had been set to stay with Al-Ettifaq until 2027 after signing a contract extension in 2024 but departed midway through the season.

Wrexham, after three promotions between 2022 and 2025 to reach the Championship, have drawn attention for their rapid rise and global profile. Yet their early-season form has been less bright. They sit 21st in the table after one win in five league games this term, despite a £33 million summer spending spree. The club’s expansion and high-profile ownership have kept them in the conversation, with Ryan Reynolds’ sponsorship and the US-backed backing underpinning expectations around what the team can achieve in a tougher league.

Bryan Robson’s assessment adds another dimension to the debate around Gerrard’s potential arrival. Speaking to OLBG, Robson said the decision would hinge on whether Gerrard wants to return to management and acknowledged his strong track record, including success in Scotland and experience in English football. He stressed that Wrexham should not consider replacing Phil Parkinson hastily; Parkinson led the club to successive promotions and helped build the squad that earned a place in the Championship. Robson indicated that Gerrard’s availability would be of interest to him if the opportunity arose, but cautioned that the club would need to balance ambition with stability and timing.

The comments reflect a broader conversation about whether Gerrard would be the right fit to steady Wrexham in their first season at the second tier. Robson highlighted the attractiveness of the project, pointing to the club’s fan base, the enthusiasm generated by Reynolds’ involvement, and the resources that have allowed Wrexham to recruit over the summer. Still, he insisted that any decision would require careful consideration of the current coaching setup and the long-term objectives for the club.

Looking ahead, Wrexham travel to Norwich in the Championship on Saturday before hosting Reading in the third round of the EFL Cup three days later.
