Giants bench James Hudson after four penalties, costly opening drive vs. Cowboys

ARLINGTON, Texas — New York Giants left tackle James Hudson was benched early Sunday after committing four penalties and allowing a sack on the team’s opening possession against the Dallas Cowboys.

The drive covered 110 yards but stalled short of the end zone and resulted in a 38-yard field goal by Graham Gano because of penalties that repeatedly set the Giants back. Hudson was flagged for two false starts and two personal fouls, including a dead-ball penalty that pushed the Giants from the doorstep of the Cowboys’ goal line back to the 17 and a blow to the head that television broadcasters said could have warranted an ejection.

Head coach Brian Daboll was seen on the broadcast speaking into his headset and instructing staff to remove Hudson and insert rookie Marcus Mbow, who replaced Hudson at the start of the second drive. Hudson remained on the sideline and was visibly upset; offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo and teammates, along with offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, gathered around him in an attempt to calm him and keep him engaged.

Mbow, who mostly played right tackle at Purdue, was signed and trained by the Giants as a swing tackle. The team acquired Hudson early in free agency to provide a true swing tackle option after the two-year experiment of moving guard Josh Ezeudu into that role. Ezeudu began the season on injured reserve.

Sunday’s disciplinary breakdown followed a shaky start to Hudson’s Giants tenure. He allowed six quarterback pressures in New York’s season-opening loss to the Washington Commanders, and his aggressive style was on display throughout the offseason; Hudson was involved in an on-field altercation with Carolina defensive end Brian Burns during organized team activities.

The Giants’ decision to bench Hudson underscores the immediate pressure on the tackle group while former All-Pro Andrew Thomas remains out and unable to play the first two games of the season. New York has shuffled personnel along the offensive front as it seeks stability at tackle and better protection for its quarterbacks.

Daboll and the Giants did not immediately provide a full public comment on the benching after the game. The coaching staff’s in-game decision to replace Hudson highlighted concerns about discipline and execution that cost the offense points and momentum on a drive that began deep in Giants territory and advanced into the red zone before penalties reversed the progress.

Hudson’s removal represents a quick corrective move by the coaching staff in response to a sequence that combined false starts, personal fouls and an allowed sack. With Mbow inserted, the Giants will evaluate their tackle options in the coming days as they prepare for their next game and sort through availability while Thomas is sidelined and Ezeudu remains on injured reserve.
