Giants promote top prospect Bryce Eldridge as wild-card race tightens

The San Francisco Giants recalled top prospect Bryce Eldridge on Monday as they press a late-season charge toward the National League wild-card, a move that comes with the club chasing the New York Mets for the final playoff spot.

Eldridge, a 20-year-old outfielder ranked No. 13 on MLB Pipeline’s top prospects list, was promoted after first baseman Dominic Smith was placed on the injured list with a hamstring strain. With Triple-A Sacramento this season, Eldridge slashed .249/.322/.514 with 18 home runs and 63 RBIs in 66 games. He made his major-league debut Monday night, starting as the designated hitter and going 0-for-3 with a strikeout in San Francisco’s 8-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sept. 15.

The Diamondbacks’ win moved Arizona to within 1½ games of the Mets in the tight wild-card picture, while the Giants and Cincinnati Reds sat two games back of the final NL playoff spot. New York, holding the last wild-card berth, entered Monday at 77-73 and has endured a difficult stretch that included an eight-game losing streak. Philadelphia clinched the NL East title on Monday.

San Francisco’s move to summon Eldridge is part of a broader push that has revived the team’s postseason hopes after a slow start. The Giants, who acquired All-Star slugger Rafael Devers in June, were 7½ games out of a playoff spot and seven games below .500 as recently as Aug. 22. A 14-7 run since late August brought the club back into contention, though San Francisco had lost three straight and four of five entering Tuesday’s games.

The Giants also benefited from in-season roster adjustments originating at the trade deadline. In a multi-player deal with New York, San Francisco sent reliever Tyler Rogers to the Mets in exchange for right-hander Jose Butto, pitching prospect Blake Tidwell and outfielder Drew Gilbert. Gilbert has shown a resurgence at the plate, hitting .302 with a .945 OPS over his last 15 games for the Giants, providing a timely boost to the offense.

Rogers has been a steady addition to the Mets’ bullpen, posting a 2.14 ERA in 21 innings with New York. Still, the Mets’ recent slump has left the final wild-card spot precarious, and rival clubs including the Giants and Reds have closed the gap in a crowded race.

Eldridge’s promotion gives San Francisco another young bat to quantify its second-half surge and add depth while Smith recovers. Selected in the first round of the 2023 draft, Eldridge’s power and run production in Triple-A were among the factors that prompted the call-up; the club will evaluate how his tools translate at the major-league level during the stretch run.

Manager and front-office officials have indicated roster flexibility will be important as the Giants attempt to sustain their late push, and Eldridge’s presence on the active roster offers lineup options amid injuries and matchup considerations. The team’s immediate goal is to convert recent momentum into wins and climb into a playoff position before the regular season concludes.

With days remaining in the regular season, both the Mets and the chasing clubs face high stakes. The Giants' decision to call up Eldridge reflects a combination of necessity—stemming from Smith’s injury—and strategic planning as San Francisco seeks to extend its season into October. The coming weeks will determine whether the move and the team's recent run can displace the Mets and secure a postseason berth.
