Giants uncertain about Andrew Thomas for Week 2 after he skips Wednesday practice

Giants left tackle Andrew Thomas did not practice Wednesday, leaving his availability for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys uncertain. Head coach Brian Daboll said the decision to hold Thomas out was part of a training-staff rehabilitation plan rather than a setback.

Instead of taking part in team drills, Thomas was scheduled to go through running and "some other things," Daboll said, adding, "Hoping to get him out here the next two days and see where he’s at at the end of the week." Daboll also said, "I know he feels better. He felt better last week, he feels better this week than the week before. He’s making good progress."

Thomas missed the entire preseason while recovering from surgery to repair a Lisfranc fracture suffered against the Cincinnati Bengals last October, six games into the 2024 season. The Giants have been cautious with his return as they monitor his workload in practice leading up to Monday’s game week deadline.

The line’s struggles were evident in New York’s 21-6 season-opening loss to the Washington Commanders. The Giants managed 30 total rushing yards from three running backs and were unable to consistently protect quarterback Russell Wilson, who was sacked twice and credited with eight hits. Thomas’ Week 1 replacement at left tackle, James Hudson III, did not have a strong showing, a shortcoming shared by the other four starters on the line.

Other injuries and absences were noted at the Giants’ practice. Rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers was limited as the team conservatively managed a lingering back issue. Wan’Dale Robinson was held out of practice because of an ankle concern; Daboll said Robinson "should be good" later in the week. Veteran nose tackle Dexter Lawrence was not on the field because his wife gave birth to the couple’s first child.

The Giants will continue to evaluate Thomas over the next two practice days before finalizing their lineup for Sunday. The team’s offensive performance in Week 1 has heightened the importance of a healthy and available starting left tackle, but Daboll emphasized a measured approach to Thomas’ return as the organization balances immediate needs with the player’s long-term recovery.
