Gotham FC completes record $1.25 million transfer for Jaedyn Shaw

Gotham FC announced Thursday that it has acquired U.S. midfielder Jaedyn Shaw from the North Carolina Courage in a club-record, intraleague transfer worth $1.25 million, the first seven-figure deal between NWSL clubs. The club said the fee will be paid in intraleague transfer funds over installments and that the amount eclipses the league’s previous top mark for transfers between clubs.

Shaw, 20, said the price tag reflects Gotham’s belief in her potential and expressed determination to justify the investment. "It's the club showing that they're investing in me and they see my potential and they see my value," she said. "I want to make sure that I live up to that."

Gotham head coach Juan Carlos Amorós described the transfer as evidence of ownership's ambition to remain at the forefront of a changing women's soccer market. "The fee shows the ambition" and the club's desire "to stay at the forefront," he said, while declining to specify exactly where Shaw would fit in Gotham's attack. The club also said it is working on "an updated and extended" contract; reports from ESPN indicate the deal could run through the 2029 season.

Shaw began her professional career with the San Diego Wave in 2022 at age 17 and made her debut for the U.S. women's national team in 2023. She was part of the U.S. squad that won Olympic gold last summer and has eight goals in 26 senior national-team appearances. This season, Shaw joined the Courage but struggled for consistent impact, scoring three goals and recording one assist in 19 matches, including 10 starts, and has been left off recent national team rosters by coach Emma Hayes.

Speaking about the move, Shaw called it "an incredible opportunity" to take another step in her career in a city she described as "incredible" with a "club that is really breaking barriers." She added that her immediate objective remains returning to the national team and earning spots on major tournament rosters.

Gotham general manager Yael Averbuch West said the transfer aligns with the club's roster-building strategy. "Our players are very well aware that we're never satisfied with where our roster is. We always want to make it more competitive," she told The Post earlier this summer, noting the club's recent turnover and the desire to secure players for the coming years.

The move comes amid a wider trend of rising transfer fees in women's soccer, with multiple recent seven-figure moves within Europe and the NWSL, and signals intensifying investment across the sport.

Gotham are currently on a two-game NWSL winning streak and a five-match unbeaten run across all competitions, a run that has lifted them to sixth place in the league table, two points behind the top four. Amorós did not commit to making Shaw available for Friday's match in San Diego against her former club.

The club described the transfer as a statement of intent in a league that is increasingly active in the transfer market. With the financial terms to be paid over time and an extended contract reportedly in preparation, Gotham and Shaw have set expectations that will be measured by on-field results and Shaw's ability to re-establish herself as a regular on the national team.
