Guardians' David Fry sidelined 6-8 weeks after being hit in the face by pitch

The Cleveland Guardians announced on Wednesday that designated hitter David Fry will be sidelined for 6-8 weeks after being hit in the face by a fastball Tuesday night against the Detroit Tigers in Cleveland. Fry was struck in the sixth inning while bunting, and Detroit pitcher Tarik Skubal left the mound briefly before the inning ended. Skubal has since reached out to Fry and said he hopes he is OK.

Imaging and clinical examination confirmed that Fry sustained multiple, minimally displaced, left-sided facial and nasal fractures. The team said the injury will require close monitoring, including serial assessments, and Fry is expected to fully recover over the next 6–8 weeks without the need for surgery. Fry was recently discharged from the Cleveland Clinic and is resting comfortably.

Fry appeared in 66 games for the Guardians this season, compiling eight home runs and 23 RBIs. The injury occurred during a game at Progressive Field, and Fry’s condition prompted immediate on-field attention from Guardians manager Stephen Vogt and medical staff. The team thanked those involved in delivering prompt treatment and said Fry is under careful observation as he begins the recovery process. David Fry attended to by medical staff during game

The Guardians did not indicate a timetable for Fry’s return beyond the 6–8 week window, noting that his rehabilitation will be closely monitored and that he is expected to recover fully without surgery. The Tigers and Guardians organizations expressed concern for Fry’s health and indicated the focus remains on his recovery and well-being rather than the game. As Fry works toward full health, Cleveland will rely on its depth while monitoring his progress and planning any roster adjustments as needed.
