Gudmundsson own goal hands Fulham dramatic 1-0 win over Leeds

Gabriel Gudmundsson's stoppage-time own goal handed Fulham a 1-0 victory over Leeds at Craven Cottage on Saturday, depriving the visitors of a point in a match that looked destined for a draw until the 94th minute.

The decisive moment arrived after Fulham introduced a trio of substitutes, with new signing Kevin sent on in the 76th minute. Kevin's long-range effort forced a corner in the closing stages; from that set piece Gudmundsson accidentally diverted the ball into his own net, sealing all three points for Marco Silva's side.

Silva stressed the impact of his bench after the match, saying the tempo of Fulham's play changed when substitutes were introduced. Emile Smith Rowe and Adama Traore also came on as Silva looked to unlock a game that had been low on clear chances for the hosts. Kevin, the club-record signing who arrived from Shakhtar Donetsk for about £34.6 million on transfer deadline day, made his debut and drew particular praise for his 15-minute cameo.

Leeds manager Daniel Farke described the outcome as "heartbreaking" after his side produced what he called an "excellent away performance" but failed to take a point. Leeds' attacking struggles continued: the team has scored once from open play in the Premier League this season, managing just a single goal in 360 minutes of football, the fewest they have recorded after four matches in the club's history.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin started as Leeds sought a focal point in attack in the absence of injured Joel Piroe. Calvert-Lewin had two headed opportunities — one straight at Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno and another that led to Sean Longstaff's effort striking the crossbar — but Leeds were unable to convert those chances. Karl Darlow, making his first Premier League appearance in almost four years for Leeds, produced a strong save to deny Harry Wilson from a free kick, highlighting what Silva later said was a quality option Leeds had nearly acquired on transfer deadline day.

Farke made five changes to his starting lineup, partly forced by injuries, and saw the return of skipper Ethan Ampadu as part of a midfield that included Sean Longstaff and Anton Stach. The changes were among 23 alterations Leeds have made to their starting XI so far this season, a level of rotation that has accompanied inconsistent results.

Fulham, who last season scored a Premier League-high 17 goals from substitutes, relied on the same depth to influence Saturday's game late on. Silva noted that Kevin's profile and directness brought a different dimension at a stage when the match needed a spark.

Fulham (4-2-3-1): Bernd Leno; Tete, Joachim Andersen, Tosin Bassey, Ryan Sessegnon; Aleksandar Mitrovic (note: Mitrovic did not feature); reports listed Luka Iwobi among starters. Leeds (4-3-3): Karl Darlow; Phillip Bogle, Joe Rodon, Pascal Struijk, Gabriel Gudmundsson; Sean Longstaff, Ethan Ampadu, Anton Stach; Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Brenden Aaronson, Noah Okafor. Referee Craig Pawson officiated the match. Attendance at Craven Cottage was 27,327.

The result leaves Fulham with three points from the fixture and a late boost from a debutant cameo, while Leeds must seek solutions to a growing lack of cutting edge in the final third as they prepare for the next round of fixtures.
