Haaland: 'Because I am British' Q&A fuels accent debate as City extend hot form

Erling Haaland offered a blunt answer about why his accent sounds more British by the day, telling fans on a Snapchat Q&A that he is British. The Norwegian star had added to his goal tally after scoring in the weekend's Manchester derby and in the Champions League win over Napoli this week.

Born in Leeds in 2000, Haaland spent the first three years of his life in Britain before moving back to Norway. He has said he grew up a Leeds United fan and, after scoring against Leeds at Elland Road in 2022, refused to celebrate out of respect for the club. He later described his mixed loyalties publicly, noting the moments when his father, Alf-Inge Haaland, played for Leeds and when he wore a City kit with his father’s name alongside Leeds memories in his youth.

After an already prolific start to the season, Haaland has six goals in five games, with three coming this week: two in the Manchester derby and one in City's opening Champions League victory over Napoli. His pace and positioning have again drawn praise from teammates and coaches as City maintain their title challenge.

The Napoli win also underscored Haaland’s rapid ascent in European competition. He became the fastest player in Champions League history to reach 50 goals, accomplishing the mark in 49 appearances, ahead of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Thierry Henry. Following the match, Phil Foden described Haaland’s scoring run as "unheard of" and credited the pair for finding a productive balance in the front line as City prepared for a London trip to face Arsenal on Sunday.

City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, indicated that his side will need to maintain focus on a difficult away assignment in the capital, where Arsenal have looked sharp this season. The run of form leaves City poised to build momentum heading into a busy spell of fixtures, with Haaland’s early-season exploits remaining central to their aspirations.
