Haaland says accent turned British: 'Because I am British' as City forward maintains record pace

Erling Haaland offered a blunt reply when asked why his accent sounds more British by the day during a Snapchat Q&A on Friday. The Manchester City forward had just contributed to a productive week, scoring in the Manchester derby and then in the Champions League, as City pressed their bid for more silverware.

Asked by a user named Meira why his accent had turned so British, Haaland answered simply: 'Because I am British.' The forward was born in Leeds in 2000, while his father, Alf-Inge Haaland, was playing for Leeds United. He spent the first three years of his life in Britain before moving back to Norway. Haaland has previously said he grew up following Leeds United.

Haaland's form this season remains exceptional. He has six goals in five appearances, with three coming in the most recent stretch: two in the Manchester derby and one as City opened their Champions League campaign against Napoli on Thursday. His Napoli strike made him the quickest player to reach 50 Champions League goals, doing so in 49 appearances, faster than Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Thierry Henry.

After that game, team-mate Phil Foden praised Haaland's scoring run, saying: 'They were a nightmare team to breakdown. I thought we were pretty clever and didn't give away too many turnovers.' He added: 'Erling is always going to make that run. It's just about getting that connection. He seems to break every record going. It's unheard of what he's doing. What an unbelievable player.'

Pep Guardiola has City headed to London for a challenging test against an in-form Arsenal side on Sunday, a fixture that will further test Haaland and his colleagues as they chase domestic and European glory.

Haaland’s off-field moment underscores a broader narrative about a player who, by birth and upbringing, straddles football cultures even as he continues to rewrite individual benchmarks. Born in Leeds while his father competed for the Whites, Haaland spent his early years in England before returning to Norway. He later rose to global stardom with City, where he has become a relentless goal machine, a fact underscored by his record-setting pace in Europe’s top club competition and his ongoing impact in key fixtures this season.
