Helena Rowland to start at full-back as England replace Ellie Kildunne for World Cup quarter-final

England will start Helena Rowland at full-back in Sunday’s Women’s Rugby World Cup quarter-final against Scotland after Ellie Kildunne was ruled out with concussion, head coach John Mitchell confirmed.

Kildunne, the reigning world player of the year, suffered a head injury in the win over Australia when her head struck the turf in a tackle by Samantha Wood. Mitchell said Rowland was "probably the most valuable person on the team," praising her skill set and versatility as reasons for the call-up.

Rowland has been used across England's backline throughout her international career, appearing in every position from 10 to 15 and even listed as an emergency fourth-choice scrum-half. That adaptability has largely made her a bench option this season: she was a replacement in four of five matches in the Women's Six Nations and has started only once in England's three pool games at this tournament. She has won 43 caps since making her England debut in 2020.

Mitchell's decision reflects both Rowland's multi-positional ability and the specific demands created by Kildunne's absence. Gloucester-Hartpury full-back Emma Sing, a specialist in the role, remains part of the matchday squad but has just 12 caps and has yet to show the same consistency as Rowland at Test level. Sing and Rowland both featured in England's pool victory over Samoa, with Sing at full-back and Rowland at fly-half; Rowland scored a tournament single-match record 27 points in that game, converting 11 of 14 kicks and scoring a try.

Rowland's try against Samoa illustrated her attacking instincts: she slowed the play, stepped into the blind side and finished as the Samoan defensive line retreated. Her place-kicking accuracy in that match will be of particular reassurance to Mitchell as England have made changes at No. 10 for the quarter-final, with Holly Aitchison selected ahead of regular fly-half Zoe Harrison. Sing remains available on the bench as a kicking option.

Kildunne's absence removes a high-profile attacking threat — she was the World Rugby women's player of the year — but England's coaching staff believe the team can maintain its structure. Kildunne's positioning in the backfield had been tested by Australia, who used several 50-22 kicks in their meeting, and England's backline has worked to improve its cohesion throughout the tournament. Rowland produced an enterprising 35-minute cameo after replacing Kildunne against Australia, creating space and making breaks with incisive running lines.

Rowland moved from Saracens to Loughborough Lightning in 2020, citing a preference for a faster, looser style of play. Early in her England career she competed with Zoe Harrison for the fly-half role vacated by the retiring Katy Daley-McLean; Harrison was chosen for her steadier approach, and Rowland subsequently featured across the backline. She was England's first-choice full-back during the knockout stages of the previous World Cup until ankle ligament damage in the semi-final against Canada ruled her out of the final. On that occasion, Kildunne came into the side for the showpiece; the roles are now reversed.

Mitchell initially identified Rowland as the player he could least afford to lose during a pre-tournament warm-up against Spain, underlining how the coaching staff value her versatility and match impact. England face Scotland at Ashton Gate in Bristol on Sunday, 14 September, with kickoff at 16:00 BST. Coverage is scheduled on BBC One, Sports Extra Two and the BBC Sport website and app.

Rowland, who has also represented Great Britain at Sevens at the Olympics, has won 43 caps since making her debut for England in 2020

With Kildunne requiring a full and precautionary recovery from concussion to be available for any later rounds, Rowland’s elevation gives England a tested and flexible option at full-back. The decision also hands Rowland a chance to operate in the spotlight she has often earned from the bench, and the outcome of Sunday’s fixture will test whether Mitchell’s assessment of her value to the squad can pay immediate dividends on the field.
