Iglesias says missing pieces, chemistry hurt Mets' 2025 season

Jose Iglesias says the Mets' 2025 season has suffered from tangible gaps on the field and intangible gaps in the clubhouse, hindering their ability to reproduce last year's 'OMG' chemistry. In April, he noted the club lacked a more representative Juan Soto and Brandon Nimmo, pieces he said helped drive that energy.

Pete Alonso's production fell in May and Francisco Lindor's in June, and by the second half the Mets largely lacked dependable starting pitching amid a rash of injuries and underperformance. Those dynamics have jeopardized their playoff outlook and allowed the Phillies to claim the NL East crown.

Iglesias said this week: "They're missing a few presences, not just me." "I think J.D. Martinez and Jose Quintana and all those guys. Everybody along the team over there, we did a pretty good job last year connecting and supporting each other in good and bad moments."

Beyond the clubhouse concerns, the Mets have not had dependable starting pitching in the second half due to injuries and underperformance, a deficit that has strained the rotation and forced the club to rely on depth arms. The offense has shown flashes but lacked consistent production beyond April, with Alonso and Lindor each experiencing downturns at different points.

As the season winds down, Iglesias' remarks underscore a broader narrative about leadership and cohesion as necessary complements to on-field improvements. The Mets must balance health, depth and culture if they hope to salvage a postseason run after losing the NL East crown to Philadelphia this year.
