Jake Browning led the Cincinnati Bengals on a 15-play, 92-yard drive and scored the game-winning touchdown on a one-yard run with 18 seconds remaining, then paused on the field to hold hands with his fiancée after the Bengals' 31-27 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday at Paycor Stadium.

The late score capped a comeback in which Browning, replacing injured starter Joe Burrow in the second quarter, completed 21 of 32 passes for 241 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. The win gave Cincinnati a 2-0 start for the first time in seven years.

Browning entered the game after Burrow was helped off the field and into the locker room with what multiple reports later described as a severe turf toe injury that will require surgery and is expected to sideline Burrow for a minimum of three months. Team and league sources indicate Burrow suffered a Grade 3 turf toe injury with torn ligaments.

A video posted to Instagram by Browning's fiancée, Stephanie Niles, captured the couple holding hands as Browning left the field. In the clip, Niles — seated in a front-row seat and waving to attract his attention while wearing a halter top bearing Browning's No. 6 and orange leather pants — gushed that Browning had found her in the crowd. "That's the first time he's ever looked at me," she said on her Story, later adding, "No seriously I'm crying."

The two have been together seven years, celebrating their anniversary in May, and Browning proposed to Niles on a Malibu beach last November, according to photos posted to social media.

Browning wrote on his Instagram account after the game, "What a roller coaster," along with a snapshot of the two of them holding hands. His performance recalled his 2023 stint as the Bengals' backup who started the final seven games while Burrow recovered from a season-ending wrist injury; Browning went 4-3 as the starter that year.

Sunday's game was marked by momentum swings. Browning engineered the long, decisive drive against a Jaguars defense that had pressured Cincinnati at times, and his one-yard run sealed the comeback. The Bengals improved to 2-0 after overcoming the setback of losing their franchise quarterback early in the contest.

Burrow's injury was visible on the play that forced him from the game in the second quarter. Team officials have since confirmed that Burrow will undergo surgery; the timeline provided by multiple outlets projects a multi-month recovery. With Burrow sidelined, Browning is expected to take over as the starter while the Bengals work through the injury timetable.

Cincinnati travels to Minnesota to face the Vikings on Sunday. The Bengals will enter that game relying on Browning's experience in relief starts, while coaching staff and medical personnel continue to manage Burrow's recovery and outline the team's plans for the quarterback position in the near term.

Bengals moment

The Bengals' victory and the on-field exchange between Browning and Niles drew attention on social media, where fans and teammates reacted to both the game-clinching drive and the personal moment. Team officials provided no immediate update on any changes to the Bengals' roster or depth chart beyond confirming that Browning would start in Burrow's absence and that the club would provide further information as it became available.

Cincinnati's ability to win without Burrow will be closely watched in the coming weeks as the team navigates a stretch of games that will shape its standing in a competitive AFC North and set expectations for how the offense will operate under Browning's direction.
