Jake Knapp breaks silence on girlfriend Makena White's death at 28 in agonizing statement

On the opening day of the Ryder Cup in New York, American golfer Jake Knapp publicly acknowledged the loss of his girlfriend Makena White, describing the death as a "tough reality to comprehend." White, 28, had been dating Knapp since August 2023 and her passing was announced as play began in the event. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Knapp, 31, is not part of the United States Ryder Cup team this week. In a statement to the Daily Mail, he said White was thoughtful and selfless, and noted the many memories they shared. He asked for privacy for White’s family and friends as they grieve. The remarks marked Knapp’s first public reflection on White's death.

White, a native of Ottawa, Ontario, was a 2019 graduate of McMaster University with degrees in communications and software engineering. She worked in surgical sales, supplying equipment to vascular and cardiac surgeons. The couple first appeared publicly as a couple after Knapp captured his first PGA Tour win at the Mexico Open in February 2024.

Tributes poured in from friends, colleagues and fans on social media. A friend who posted the family’s statement described White as deeply missed by her dad, her family, and her dogs, and recalled her warmth and energy. The message also encouraged donations to Bruyère Brain Health & Memory Clinic or the Griffin Bell Endowment Fund in her memory.

CBS Sports course reporter Amanda Balionis and others shared condolences, praising White’s warmth and her ability to connect with people. Golf writer Dan Rapoport likewise paid respects. Some fans resurfaced a heartfelt Instagram note White shared last month to Knapp, expressing gratitude for the couple’s time together; Knapp responded with heart emojis.

As the Ryder Cup event continues, the golf world honors White while respecting the family’s privacy. The specifics of the death remain private, and there is no indication of any suspicions or foul play. Knapp’s public remarks provide a window into the personal toll of the loss during a major tournament week.
