Jamie Carragher and Paul Scholes Question Jadon Sancho’s Fit at Aston Villa After Loan Move
Former England defenders say the winger lacks a clear standout quality and pace could be a concern as Sancho seeks to revive his career at Villa.

Jamie Carragher and Paul Scholes have publicly questioned Jadon Sancho’s attributes and suitability for Aston Villa after the winger completed a season-long loan from Manchester United on transfer deadline day.
Carragher said he remained unsure about Sancho’s defining quality, while Scholes warned that a lack of pace and stamina could limit the 24-year-old’s effectiveness on the larger Villa Park pitch. The comments follow a difficult period for Sancho, who has struggled to regain the form that made him a breakthrough star at Borussia Dortmund.
Carragher, speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, said he could not picture a single standout attribute for Sancho in the way he can for other attacking players. "I'm still not sure there's that much ability there. He's okay, but I don't really see what his standout quality is," Carragher said. He contrasted Sancho with Marcus Rashford, citing Rashford's pace, shooting and set-piece power as clearly identifiable strengths.
Scholes described the signing as "weird" and highlighted physical concerns. "We talked about the size of the pitch might be an issue for him, Villa Park is massive. A lack of pace, a lack of legs, it concerns you," Scholes said. He added questions about how Sancho would consistently beat defenders at top-flight level and whether he could provide consistent end product for Villa.
Sancho joined Manchester United in 2021 from Dortmund in a deal reported at around £73 million. He scored 12 goals in 83 appearances for United, and experienced a public falling out with then-manager Erik ten Hag that preceded a loan back to Dortmund in January 2024. Sancho spent last season on loan at Chelsea, where he scored five goals in 41 matches and netted in Chelsea's UEFA Conference League final victory. Reports said Chelsea paid a roughly £5 million fee to return him to Manchester United rather than complete a £25 million permanent transfer.
At Dortmund, where Sancho rose to prominence, he scored 50 goals in 137 matches between 2017 and 2021. His last appearance for England came in 2021; he has 23 caps.
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has had recent success with loan players — Marcus Rashford enjoyed an effective loan spell under Emery before moving on — and Villa will hope Sancho can rediscover his best form while also contributing across Premier League and European fixtures. Villa are competing in the Europa League this season, which could provide Sancho with extra playing opportunities beyond domestic fixtures.
Sancho, who has been reported to earn in the region of £250,000 per week, could feature in Villa's matchday squad for the first time when they host Everton on the first Saturday after the international break. Villa also face Brentford in the Carabao Cup on September 16.
Carragher and Scholes’ comments add to scrutiny surrounding a player who was once considered among Europe’s most promising young wingers. Both pundits framed their critiques in terms of observable qualities — such as pace, consistency and a distinct attacking specialty — rather than personal attacks, and their assessments will form part of the wider conversation about whether Sancho can adapt his game and re-establish himself at club and international level.
Aston Villa officials have not publicly responded to the pundits’ remarks. The club will assess Sancho’s immediate impact in training and early-season fixtures as they judge whether the loan can provide the platform for a career revival.
