Japan Favored as U.S. Men’s National Team Hosts Friendly in Columbus amid Form Concerns

The United States men’s national team will face Japan in an international friendly Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio, with Japan listed as the betting favorite despite the match being played on American soil.

Betting markets show Japan at about +120 to win, the United States at roughly +210 and the draw near +240. New York Post betting analyst Michael Leboff recommended backing Japan at +120 on FanDuel, citing the Blue Samurai’s organized style and pressing game as a difficult test for a U.S. side that has struggled for consistent form.

The match carries extra scrutiny for the U.S. because it follows a 2-0 loss to South Korea that added to a string of disappointing results for a program under heightened pressure ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which the United States will co-host. The U.S. briefly regained some goodwill after a deep run in the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup, largely propelled by a roster of reserves, but performances by the core group since then have raised questions about cohesion and consistency.

Japan arrives with a different profile. The Blue Samurai have developed a clear identity under manager Hajime Moriyasu, who has led the team since 2018. Japan qualified for the 2026 World Cup with games to spare in the current cycle and has built momentum from notable results at the 2022 World Cup, where they upset Germany and Spain. Observers point to Japan’s high-pressing approach and collective discipline as strengths that complicate opponents’ attempts to control possession and build out of the back.

Analysts and bettors cited those traits when favoring Japan. Leboff argued that Japan’s pressing and tactical clarity should trouble a U.S. side that has shown difficulty maintaining possession and tempo against organized opponents. Betting lines and public markets have reflected that view, placing Japan ahead despite the home-field setting.

Coaching continuity and player roles are likely to be focal points for both camps. For Japan, continuity under Moriyasu has been a selling point; for the U.S., questions about rotation, player selection and tactical balance remain after recent mixed results and intermittent off-field distractions.

While friendlies are not decisive on their own, Tuesday’s encounter will be watched as a barometer of where the U.S. stands against top-tier non-European opposition less than a year before it begins hosting the World Cup. A positive result for the home side could temper criticism and buy time for adjustments; a defeat would intensify scrutiny of personnel and strategy as the U.S. prepares its roster and style for 2026.
