Jazz Chisholm fouls ball into groin as Yankees roll to 7-0 win over Orioles

NEW YORK — The New York Yankees defeated the Baltimore Orioles 7-0 on Thursday night, but the game was overshadowed by a painful moment at the plate when Jazz Chisholm fouled a ball into his groin area in the seventh inning against Orioles left-hander Jose Castillo. Chisholm was 0-2 in the at-bat when the ball ricocheted off his body, sending him to a knee as Yankees manager Aaron Boone hurried to his side.

FOX analyst Jon Smoltz called the moment, 'Yeah, that's never fun,' as Chisholm grimaced and remained on the field. He stayed in the at-bat briefly, fouling off another pitch, before he was ultimately struck out swinging to end the inning.

Chisholm finished 1-for-2 after entering as a pinch hitter, as he contributed in a game the Yankees ultimately won comfortably. New York improved to 86-67 and moved into a more comfortable position in the American League wild-card race, leading by nine games with nine games remaining. The club had endured a sour stretch in June and July, going 25-27, but has steadied in the closing weeks to reclaim momentum.

The Yankees will face Baltimore six more times this season and then three games against the Chicago White Sox. A trip to Baltimore for the series opener Friday was on the slate as New York protected its lead and kept pressure on its peers in the top wild-card spots.
