Jerry Jones says he 'smiled' at Packers fans' 'Thank you, Jerry' chants after Micah Parsons trade

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he "smiled" when Green Bay Packers fans chanted "Thank you, Jerry" following the Packers' win over the Washington Commanders, a reaction to last month's blockbuster trade that sent linebacker Micah Parsons to Green Bay.

The chant came during a postgame interview after the Packers' 27-18 victory on Thursday night, the second straight win for Green Bay since acquiring Parsons less than two weeks before the regular season began. Parsons has recorded 1.5 sacks in his first two games with the Packers.

Jones addressed the chants during an appearance on ESPN New York radio on Saturday, saying he heard similar reactions when Parsons' new team visited Detroit in the season opener. "I smiled," Jones said. "I heard a little of that in the first game when they played the Detroit Lions. But the bottom line is… when you trade one of the best players in the NFL, you’re gonna hear about it."

The Cowboys' owner reiterated that the club believed the return package obtained in the trade — multiple players and draft assets — improved Dallas' chances of assembling a roster capable of winning a championship. "Those four or five players, including the player we got, have a much better chance of helping us win a championship than one player," Jones said, calling Parsons a "rare" talent but describing the deal as "just business, all the way."

Jones also offered a personal note about Parsons, saying he "likes Micah" and recounting that he spent the entire first half of Dallas' final preseason game with Parsons' mother. He said those connections did not alter the decision-making that led to the trade.

Parsons' move from Dallas to Green Bay followed failed contract negotiations between the linebacker and the Cowboys. The trade took place shortly before the 2025 regular season, a timing that has amplified scrutiny and reactions as Parsons' new team opened the season with consecutive victories.

The Packers, buoyed by Parsons' early impact on defense, will face the Cleveland Browns in Week 3. Analysts and fans have cited Green Bay's early form and the addition of Parsons when discussing the team's status among Super Bowl contenders, though Jones framed the transaction in terms of roster construction and long-term championship prospects rather than immediate headline reactions.

Jones' comments come as the NFL settles into the early weeks of the season, where high-profile trades and contract disputes can shift narratives quickly. For now, the immediate outcomes are measurable: Parsons on the stat sheet for Green Bay and audible gratitude from visiting fans directed at the Cowboys' ownership as the trade's ripple effects continue to play out.
